I pulled up in front of my neighbors house today and was sitting in my idling E-350 '89 ford van when he called my attention to a puddle of trans fluid growing under the E4OD tranny. It started while we were talking and dumped about half a quart on the street. I'm not having any shifting problems other than the common torque converter "shudder" in OD. This van only has 85k miles and has been doing a lot of sitting for the last couple of years. The fluid is coming from the access plug for the converter drain plug. Could this just be a badly deteriorated front seal? I was under the impression that htis seal was really not under any pressure, more like a drip seal. Help!
Well, I pulled the trans today and checked the front seal...looked OK, but replaced it anyway. I'm back to my original question. Why is oil leaking out of the front of the transmission? Could I have a bad torque converter? There is some kind of a "split" hard plastic seal on the input shaft where it slides into the torque converter. Is this some kind of a seal to keep fluid in the converter and not blow back past the shaft? What am I missing? :-( Depression is starting to set in. I may be on the verge of flippin' out
