@Bonanza35 is one of the FTE'rs I specifically remember having a lot of trouble with a warranty claim and service from John Wood, but there have been others after the sale was made. As I understand it, he used to be a top choice for transmissions, but as of late he is toward the bottom of the list due to service and product reliability.
I would not recommend a JW transmission to a friend, there are too many other options out there.
Just like with anything else in 2023, if you want top quality you are going to wait and pay for it. If you want quick and pretty good, you have to take your pick of the product suppliers that are not at the top of the list. Even the somewhat local shops in north ATL that were recommended in the past by several FTE'rs are $4,000 or more if I remember correctly from a friend that recently had his 4R100 replaced.
You might try to give All Star Standard transmission (website no longer works) a call at 877-884-8553 and see if they are able to recommend anyone in your/their area for the 4R100. They are in Coolridge which is northwest of Tampa.
Well that sucks... Another supplier is out of the listing.
Not sure but I think it was a supply issue that put things on pause, they still have most of their hard parts listed on the site. Going to shoot them an email.
At this time, you can consider the transmission line discontinued indefinitely. We will still carry upgrades such as flex plates and pans but will no longer produce transmission units, torque convertors, or valve bodies.
I believe you are referring to John Wood transmissions
Thats the one I thought, thanks for verifying.
If memory serves, he is no longer directly doing the builds any more. Lots of complaints for poor customer service in recent conversations.

For reference, think I had over $1200 just in parts for my DIY rebuild and was even able to source most of them at a discount (connections are nice to have).

how difficult was the rebuild? Any speciality tools required? Preference on manufacturer for a rebuild kit? I have t had time to check out the link you provided yet. I plan on doing that this evening. Hopefully have this trans pulled by then. Quite a feat for one 140lb guy, no lift, and laying in the grass
A buddy and myself rebuilt two 4L60E transmissions years ago, with the help of YouTube and some cold beers. I’m sure I could pull that rabbit out of my hat again with the proper instructions and tips. But I also have to factor in down time. In a position where this truck is my daily and work vehicle…
I cannot recall ever seeing anything but negative posts about Monster transmissions on the facebook clubs
The only opinion I have about Monster is this. Way back in the day, Bob Riley sold a 4R100 that he developed with Greg Evans. That's here nor there. I bought a DieselSite MonsterBox 4R100....and that's the one I have 320k on.
Is Monster in a Box different than the MonsterBox from DieselSite?...most likely.
The OP can google up 4R100 rebuild kits and make his own decision. SunCoast offers rebuild kits....some flat out don't like the Suncoast 4R100, or so I've heard. Could go here as well. PATC
There was member here @mueckster that rebuilt his 4R100 and good results.
If your going to rebuild it, Arthur Anthony sells a kit that's suppose to be very good. I wouldn't give John Woods anything to rebuild. His word is not what made this site, that's for sure. I got a little over 34K miles on mine before it went out and he wouldn't warranty it. He even serviced it for me. I had a noise early on and he said I can't here it so just bring it back if it shows up again. It was like 275 miles each way out there so maybe that is why he couldn't here it. But, to make a long story short, when he did the trans it was life time warranty, like BTS. He even said that is why he was doing it and named BTS by name. My truck was almost stock as well, with AB injectors no less. I am older so no way did I beat on this truck. My first trans lasted 134K from the factory. I have heard John Woods is out of business. Retired is what I have heard.
I have tried to get a BTS, but he is always out about four months or so. Last time I checked Ford, they weren't stocking transmissions for the 7.3 anymore. Could of been Covd related!

I used a “local” distributor through my contact. I can never remember what it was called but it was bought out and changed names while I was still getting all my parts. Maybe ended up being Transtar?
I purchased them through my local parts store but worked with the distributor directly. He helped me decide what parts were actually needed since the PO had a shop rebuild mine not too long before I got it. My failure was due to the TC, I assume the previous failure was the Mechanical Diode.
So I didn’t exactly use a “kit”. I believe he sold me a full clutch kit and some other various things. I didn’t mess with bushings or anything because the truck was still well below 100k. I do have records of it all but they’re on the PC.
There are some special tools required which my dad built while I worked on the trans. They are detailed in the thread I shared. Seems like I printed them out for his reference while he worked on making them. Pretty simple DIY tools IIRC.
You’ve built other transmissions so the build itself shouldn’t be an issue for you.
Time… Not sure I’d recommend a DIY if it’s your daily driver and this is your first go with a 4R100. Maybe you’re way faster than me though. Well of course you are, I’m super slow. Wait let’s call me “methodical”. Yeah that sounds better.
