Doubtful the factory diode has made it over 250k (based on his profile). Didn’t those things fail left and right with low mileage?
When mine went out suddenly it was the TC but…
So it does have reverse? That should rule out TC. TC turns Input Shaft. Everything goes through there.
Grabbed this from somewhere years ago.
Wish I had a better understanding of how the mechanical side connected (as in what part/spline has physical connection to another for power transfer).
Correct, reverse operates normally in all aspects. Granted I only moved it backward about 15 feet. It engaged like normal, moved like normal anyway.
I probably need to update my profile… I have a build sheet from 2017 for the transmission. Truck had 245,000 on the clock. Build sheet says it had a master rebuild kit, HD converter, forward planetary set, solenoid pack, shift kit installed. The truck literally just rolled 299,000 the other day. I bought the truck in 2021.
Other info on the truck is I recently installed a hydra tuner. By recently I mean 2-3 months ago. Bought from jellybuilt. Downloaded stock tunes from hydra flash. I don’t run any of the race or performance tunes. I typically run the 40 or 65hp daily driver. Or 40hp tow on the 12’ utility trailer. When we haul heavy (12-18k rig and loaded trailer) I run the 25hp tow or run stock if it’s a real heavy. I work this truck but it def don’t see much in terms of fun abuse.
Other than that, the truck is basically stock. Typical stuff like AIH delete, ccv mod, 6637 air filter, 33” tires… have been done.
I will say, since I installed the cts3, and can see temps… the trans did seem to run a little warm in my non expert opinion. For example, on a 80 degree day, hauling a 12’ utility trailer in stop and go interstate traffic (florida) with a load the weighs maybe 800lbs, I would see 190-215 degrees. Once I would get up to 65-70 mph, it will cool back down to the high 180’s- low 190’s and hold.
It isn't the converter, the transfer case, the solenoids, or a diode. None of them can allow reverse to work but not forward. The trans has had an internal failure and needs to come out and be rebuilt or replaced.
Running codes is fun, but in this case, it would be a waste of time. Something mechanical broke inside the transmission.
Thank you for your reply sir! What would you recommend as far as a replacement? I’ve heard good things about Tom Woods but I don’t know if he’s even in my ballpark as far as budget, but at the same time, I don’t want to be doing this again in 50,000 miles either. I included more info about the truck and its use in my reply to RacinJasonWV if any of that helps. Im assuming a rebuild is probably the cheapest route, if that is the case, parts recommendation?
I think she’s toast guys…. Drained the fluid, it’s dark and smells like burnt clutches for sure. Had some nast buildup on the drain plug too. Getting ready to pull the pan. May wait until morning.
I did my own rebuild. But it’s been years ago now so I’m no help. Followed that guide and bought the book.
Otherwise and reputable local shop should be able to build a 4R100.
If I was able to get anything I wanted it would be a BTS. Never heard one single bad thing about his transmissions. Costly and a long wait though.
One of the other previously popular builders is no longer recommended. I’m not sure which one so I’ll let someone else speak up to prevent me sharing bad info.

I believe you are referring to John Wood transmissions.
Others options include Wyse, Diesel Site, Ford HD4R100, locally rebuilt, etc...
BTS seems to be the go to guy around here. The line is not short, but claims to have you in and out the same day. I have heard rumors there is a room for rent close, and a loaner ride to sightsee while your truck is on the lift.

As much as I’d like to do that, I’m in central FL. Towing my truck 1200 miles to MO is not an option, nor in my budget. Does BTS have transmissions ready to ship, do you know? Maybe use mine for a core?

Is there a specific reason JW isn’t recommended anymore? Shotty work, or did he pi$$ off some of the wrong people? I’m not dead set on him, am just curious. Seems like every thread I find on here from the past, everyone recommends him or BTS. Seen a lot of chatter about the Ford Hd4r100 being not so reliable, but have seen just as much about it being the only way to go on a budget… how does one decide on which transmission? Im not totally opposed to having a good shop rebuild what I have… but I’m relatively new to the area, and I’m not aware of any good shops around. We have tried a couple different shops for different trucks, and it’s been a nightmare.
so if anyone has a recommendation for the central florida area, Lakeland, Bartow, winter haven, Tampa, Orlando Area… I’d greatly appreciate it.

@Bonanza35 is one of the FTE'rs I specifically remember having a lot of trouble with a warranty claim and service from John Wood, but there have been others after the sale was made. As I understand it, he used to be a top choice for transmissions, but as of late he is toward the bottom of the list due to service and product reliability.
I would not recommend a JW transmission to a friend, there are too many other options out there.
Just like with anything else in 2023, if you want top quality you are going to wait and pay for it. If you want quick and pretty good, you have to take your pick of the product suppliers that are not at the top of the list. Even the somewhat local shops in north ATL that were recommended in the past by several FTE'rs are $4,000 or more if I remember correctly from a friend that recently had his 4R100 replaced.
You might try to give All Star Standard transmission (website no longer works) a call at 877-884-8553 and see if they are able to recommend anyone in your/their area for the 4R100. They are in Coolridge which is northwest of Tampa.

Well that sucks... Another supplier is out of the listing.
