According to the pic sent to me of the crankshaft assembly on my '50 F-1, it shows that the starter support, (the piece that the starter motor mounts to), goes in ffront of the flywheel. So I took everything apart and none of the holes on the starter motor support lines up. I take the starter support and put it against the bell housing and the holes line up perfectly. Do I mount the flywheel and clutch pressure plate and then the starter motor support then the bell housing?
Install the flywheel on the crank hub, then your clutch and pressure plate. Next install the front half of the bell housing by bolting it to the block. The starter plate then bolts to the half bell housing and is located in front of the flywheel (engine side). The starter bolts up so that the bendix gear pulls into the flywheel ring gear from the rear.
In this picture that EffieTrucker posted on the other thread, pn 6392 is the half bell used in trucks - the other "half" is bolted to the transmission UNLESS you have a car bell housing - then it could be one piece.
Starter braxe Back of the motor block Bell housing
The starter support mounts after I put the flywheel and clutch/pressure plate on, correct? Pictured is the pics requested. I have 3 bell housings.
You can install or remove the starter plate with the flywheel, the clutch, all the bellhousings, and the transmission installed. It is easier if you leave the clutch cover (the furthest forward bellhousing in your picture above) a little loose so you can shove the starter plate in.
OK, I have the flywheel clutch and pressure plat installed, can I still slip the starter mount in front of the flywheel? Also how do I hold it in place until I can mount the bell housing, using zip ties?
The starter brace I have will not fit between the bell housing and the pressure plate. Give me the mounting sequence, starter plate then flywheel then clutch and pressure plate then bell housing? Evefry pic that I find in the mannual does not show the sequence.
Once the flywheel , clutch , bellhousing and gearbox are all installed , the starter plate simply slips in front of the bellhousing and bolts to the bellhousing .
It does not fit between the bell housing and the pressure plate.
Now that you have the flywheel bolted to the crank shaft, the clutch disk is captured between the flywheel and pressure plate which is bolted to the flywheel.
Now, bolt the bell housing to the engine block. When that is done, bolt the starter plate to the bell housing. It fits just behind the oil pan and it acts as a shield to keep road debris out of the flywheel AND as a mounting surface for the starter.
Every where I looked I thought the starter plate mounted to the bell housing and every time I tried it would run into the pressure plate. Now that I know it goes between the oil pan and the fly wheel I can get things going. Thanks again
