Starter bendix staying engaged/ drag on starter

Well new to the site,
Hope you guys can help

Ok, here is what I did my prior motor developed a crack in the block on the passenger side near the starter which of course required to replace the motor. I replace the motor with one from the junk yard, where they provided me the number of the gentlemen that sold it to them he told me it ran when he brought it in. This motor came from a 1996 f450 auto E4OD.

Original starter worked great prior to pulling out cracked motor.

installed other motor, reinstall flywheel/clutch, utilized to adapter plate form the motor from the junk yard (E4OD), reinstalled transmission, and starter.

Went to start, starter sound of binding, look to evaluate and starter bendix is staying engaged to the flywheel, with key off and starter is not turning.

Then Slide transmission back removed the adapter plate that came with the auto and replace with one that was original with the cracked block. reinstalled transmission, and starter, still hanging up.

Now some additional information, when removal of the starter the bendix does retract into the starter. The negative battery cables did not look that great replaced with new cables cleaned all surfaces of the cables going to the motor. One battery very weak, so was replaced.

Also, I have read where people said ignition switch can be the problem, but does not stay active, only engaged, and also when I provide the power to the starter solenoid on the fire wall, it all stays engaged on flywheel.

And yes it is wired correctly,

I just want to know what you think might be, or could possible check to eliminate prior to just buying a new starter, I never heard of this by just replacing the motor, and utilizing same flywheel, transmission, starter, and adapter plate.

So, any help will be great thanks

Here's a bump to the top.
I have never heard of this problem, but I'd venture to guess that a new starter would give you the same results. When you get it figured out, post what cured it.

Isn't there some other spacer between the flywheel/flexplate and the crank, that's different between the autos and manuals? Could you have ended up with the wrong one when you put Humpty Dumpty back together again?

Yes there is a thick spacer for the auto for the flexplate, I did remove this spacer and place the flywheel on just like it was taken off the cracked motor, so it should be all the same. So now the only difference in this set up is the motor that come from an auto. I put the orginal soild mass flywheel on, adapter plate, transmission and stater. Yea I am stumped on why it kicks out and engages turns ; however, slow like a drag, and then turn key off stays engaged with no rotation, even when you remove battery cables it stays engaged. Well I just keep playing around. Any other help be great thanks
