starter not contacting flywheel

I have a 78 f240 4wd 4 speed. I pulled out the 300-6 and replaced it with a 351m. I got a bell housing, clutch and flywheel at the wreckers and hooked it all up. The clutch etc works fine but I cannot get a starter to engage the flywheel. The starter works fine but just spins without engaging. I called the wrecker and he was vague about which year the bell housing clutch etc came from. He says it was a 80-86 f350 and he does not have the starter.
Any suggestions where to go from here. Truck runs fine but I am getting tired of towing it to start it.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions.
Greg

First thing I would do is take the starter off and test it to see if it is throwing the drive out like it should. If it is, I would go to an auto parts store and compare it to a starter from, lets say an 80 f350 w/351m and 4 sp. to see if it's similar. Is it a new starter or an old one and do you know what the starter is supposed to fit?

starter not engaging

Thanks for the replies. The part number for the starter is the same from about 76 on up. I did check the starter to be sure it was working properly and it was. I got working on it again today and turned the crank one half turn and sure enough it caught and started the engine. Turned it off, tried again and nothing, turned the crank and it worked again.Soooooo I have to pull the flywheel. I would really rather it have been the starter,
Once again thanks for the responses
