Working on it. Glad to go thru the exercise. 6, 5, 7 when I pulled the glow plugs had a foul diesely smell and the rest don’t. The oil on the stick smells fine. We be looking into the seals in those 3 for good measure make sure they are replaced.
I got it finally. Torque converter not going back far enough. It clicked 3x but it’s off and binding the motor up. Finally realized there was no play back w the tc. Usually u can scoot it back some when you unbolt it from the flywheel.
Unloosen the bell housing bolts and it turns fine. Tighten them all way down and no joy. It clicks 3x and seems to be in. What am I missing?
Well, if you tightened the engine down against the torque converter you likely broke the pump rotor and smashed the pump drive flats on the hub of the converter.

The only other thing, if you're certain it was as far back as possible, would be a ballooned converter.
Fully seated (the studs do not protrude past the bellhousing):

thanks for that info. Very helpful. The tc was working fine before the flex plate blew but we are feeling some play in it. We have a couple others - I’ll take a measurement on it.
I know the input shafts come out, I never took one out. Is it possible it got pull out some and needs reseating?
The input shaft DOES pull out but unless there's something wrong with the overdrive panetary gearset, it won't NOT go all the way back in easily. It will also go in backwards but don't know what issue that would cause because I haven't made that mistake.....yet.
Good news- bad news. Finally figured it out. The tc is fluted on the sides so it’ll fit into the worm gear slot in the center of the transmission pump. You can’t really see that slot well from the outside. I was able to shine a light in there under the truck and noticed it had a decent little bulge. Guess where the tc had been slid in several times, it caught the edge of the gear and caused a malformation on it to where now you can’t slide it all way back. I would just replace the gear but the pump is obviously quite old so I just ordered a reman.
