i just finished rebuilding my 302 out of my 81 f-100 shortbox stepside, 2x4, auto. I should be ready to drop it in on tuesday or wednesday, can anyone tell me anything about dropping a motor in? any tricks or things you guys have learned to make it easier? and what do i have to do before i start this truck up besides pre lubing it? any thoughts would be great, thanks.
this motor is pretty much stock..except for a melling rv cam, and i will be getting a new set of headers.
With an auto, use a floor jack and jack up the trans to it almost touches the firewall. I usually turn the torque converter so that the drain on the converter is down with the stud next to it at the six o'clock position. Then I can turn the flywheel to match and make aligning the studs with the holes in the flywheel easier. Always check to make sure the torque converter is all the way into the trans. While mating the trans to the motor make sure the converter studs go into the holes in the flywheel then put in a bell housing bolt loosely (DO NOT USE A BELL HOUSING BOLT TO PULL THE TRANS TO THE MOTOR) to hold them together and check the converter to see that there is some loose play between the converter and flywheel. Biggest problems I have seen is someone either not geting the converter all the way into the trans or not mating the converter properly to the flywheel and using the bell housing bolts to pull the trans and motor together. This usually results in a broken trans front pump.
heres another little cookie for ya, loosen the drivers side motor mount so it moves around, will make setting the motor in the mounts quite a bit easier then tighten it back up once it is installed
