Just did the complete Goch's coolant flush. Thanks Gooch, great write up! Unfortunately a red leak.
I have a question regarding the water pump outlet connection to the barbed fitting where the lower radiator hose connects to. There seems to be a leak between the fitting and the pump housing. Is this fitting part of the water pump or does it connect to the housing and has to be sealed? In the picture below you can see where coolant has dried in the past. How do you seal this up?
I would get a replacement neck with new O ring, that fitting is a bit on the rusted side but may be able to get cleaned up but how bad is the sealing surface?? Clean the pump with some scuff pad before installing the new parts.
Get new bolts while your are at it.
Are you running a cooling filtration system? If not cancel that barb with the plastic cap with an NPT plug I don't remember the size though maybe someone can give him the size
Boy those anodized billet lower inlets look nice. Just ordered an OEM unit today but might have to rethink that.
The thing under the plastic condom is an ECT sender for near future gauges, BTW.
Good advice. I installed this billet part from Riff Raff years ago when I changed out coolant to Rotella ELC. It still looks like new and should last for the life of the truck. The steel OEM part just rusts and leaks eventually.
Never have to worry about this part again!
On a side note, after switching to ELC I have never had a water pump fail. I bought this truck brand new in 2001 and followed the maintenance procedure to add a Ford antifreeze enhancer as per the manual. Test the coolant periodically and add the Ford product. I don't think many owners even bothered with this.
Maintaining the cooling system, by the book, resulted in 2 new water pumps over several years and less than 200k miles. Since using the Rotella ELC coolant, water pump has never leaked again. Many years ago, and almost 200k more miles!
600k between coolant changes is possible. But I have had 2 oil coolers leak and did change the coolant out instead of reusing. Cheap and always in stock at Tractor Supply at about the same price as any other coolant.
The first oil cooler reseal job did not last long. Counterfeit parts from Amazon were the culprit. Fel-Pro labeled oil cooler reseal kit was a fake. Now I know. Green O rings good, black O rings bad. And the gasket to reseal the oil cooler to the block failed the first day on the ride home! The black O rings for the cooler lasted 36k.
Now I only buy parts from the Ford dealer or other trusted sources like Riff Raff. This little $30 part cost me a lot of time and money!
And Rotella ELC has a working life, according to Shell, of about 600k miles. Then it can be refreshed with an additive to go another 400k! (it was designed for 18 wheelers) They do have a few different formulas of the Shell ELC now.
I use the original. Bottle says Shell Rotella ELC extended life concentrate. I think the newer ELC coolant says silicate free.
The billet accessories from Riff Raff seem a bit expensive at first look. But worth every penny!
Just another satisfied Riff Raff cover. Now to install the billet brake reservoir cover I bought a few weeks ago. This part is just bling. The billet lower straight inlet part is pure function and a little bling!
Good advise on the outlet. I took a look at the RiffRaff anodized billet outlet and liked what I saw and ordered one. Met all my criteria.
Will compare it to the new OEM one that I had already ordered (unfortunately before posting here). Maybe they will take it back. Should have known better.
Thanks again, fellas.
