I was just told by a Ford service dept. shop foreman that the water pumps on the diesels all " leak down some when the weather is cold". can anyone confirm this, and how much is considered normal if this is a fact. I can't help but feel this is bogus double talk and stonewalling.
was he meaning the water level leaks down some? Even so, you should not lose any water hot or cold. If the water pump is bad check the weep hole to see if coolant is leaking out of it. its located at the bottom of the water pump under the pulley.
I assume that you are talking about external leakage.
"A seal protects the water pump shaft bearing from contamination by engine coolant. If this seal fails, a weep hole in the water pump snout will leak coolant. If the seal is leaking, the water pump impeller shaft bearing will soon fail. Replace the water pump immediately."
This same service dept. just replaced the water pump a week ago today. I have been monitoring the coolant level every couple days since as I haven't been using the truuck that much (200 miles since repair); because I could smell that maple like smell of anti freeze. I noticed anti freeze leaking from the area where a stamped steel out let to the upper hose attaches to pump with cap screws. I assumed this to be the thermostat housing. When I explained this to him over the phone I was told this part was not removed to replace pump. Sounds like they are trying to pass the buck and charge me another 100.00 deductable for something that was not done correctly last week.
Frist, anytime maintenance is done to the cooling system some air gets trapped in the block, and if the techs did not "burp" all the air out then your coolant level will drop slightly for a few days/weeks until all the air gets pushed out the degas bottle.
Secondly, you are correct about the thermostat housing. It is a cheesy, stamped steel piece of crap, and leaks very easily if you are not extremely careful with it during assembly. Your best bet would be to drain the radiator down a couple gallons, pull the housing and run a bead of silicone around the outside of the o-ring.
Thanks cookie88; I plan to have this repaired by the service dept.,after they apologize for talking down to me as though I just got off a turnip truck. Ford Motor Co.will also get a call, for all the good it will do. I found in close to 50 years of driving any of the major brand trucks and cars that the dealers and their employees are all from the same litter. None have convinced me otherwise to date.
