That rubber sleeve was used to keep the fluid in the transmission when it was on the assembly line, it sealed on the shaft to the extention housing bushing. When the drive shaft was installed it pushes that rubber sleeve up the shaft and out of the way.
Bottom line its a assembly aide that is no longer needed, you can leave it alone or throw it away it serves no purpose anymore.

I'm with Mark on this one, I could not see a rubber gear at all. Maybe it is a "rubber sleeve" and not a gear as it has no gear teeth on it? Even calling it a black colored thingy would be a more accurate description. And sorry to pick, but it just difficult to understand what someone is talking about with out proper nomenclature. To find out what a gear is just ask google or other search engine "what is a gear".
