Happy July NorCal FTE! It’s looking a bit milder here except for the Humidity. I am attempting to do some cleaning in the Garage so I can work on the Full Sized Bronco.
Yesterday marked 22 years with my blushing Bride. We went out for a wonderful date dinner.
Who has plans to go to a fireworks show? Has anyone loaded up on illegal fireworks this year? It looks like law enforcement is putting a lid on street corner sales. Everywhere kids used to sell fireworks in Chinatown, there is some kind of cop. Police, Sheriff, Park Ranger, Animal Control, NOAA, School District Police, Highway Patrol..... basically anyone with a badge and gun. Even police officers in plain clothes, with badges on a chain around their neck, and their jackets pushed aside to reveal their concealed firearm. Those guys are usually Department of Justice agents. The weird thing is that NOAA truck, with the red and blue lights, and a couple of fishery inspectors with guns.
All of this to prevent kids from peddling bottle rockets on the corner. They aren't making any arrests. The idea is that if they are on the corner, the kids can't stand on that corner. All the other activities continue. Open door gambling rooms, where you walk by, look in, and see people gambling. Massage parlors offering happy endings. Non-taxed cigarettes sold at half the price of taxed cigarettes. None of that other stuff matters. Then by Tuesday, they all go back to fighting real crime. But between now, and The Fourth, you can't cruise around the block to buy fireworks. If you want fireworks, you have to know somebody who you can call, and get it delivered. That was how it worked when I was a kid. Standing on the corner did not make much money. The real money was when someone called for an order. Then whomever they called would call the beeper of the kid on the street. That kid would make the delivery, and get paid for however much the markup was.
I remember driving my 64 Falcon up to Chinatown to buy some fireworks one year. Probably about 1990.
I go to Pahrump NV just about every year with Shelby American as part of the annual Shelby Bash. They usually rent out Spring Mountain Motorsports Park. This is where I got the ride in the Ford GT Mk II. https://www.springmountainmotorsport...ity/race-track
Anyway, there's a fireworks store there that I always drove by but never stopped- until this past year. I went in and bought some mortars and bottle rockets. The place was about the size of a typical auto parts store, but it was packed floor to ceiling with all the good stuff that you can't get in CA. About a hundred bucks later I had quite the haul. I brought it all up to my buddy's property overlooking Lake Don Pedro for the annual camping trip. I ended up not lighting any since we had sustained 25 MPH winds, so I stuffed it all in my buddy's trailer and we'll try again next year. https://www.redapplefireworks.com/
Nope haven't seen it. Been homeless several times in my life, I know the feeling of despair. Last time I was homeless was 2011-2012. That is when I found out about the VA's homeless program. Also started taking advantage of all the VA assistance programs. Now that I have my disability check, and section 8 assistance, I doubt I will ever be homeless again. Being an honorably discharged veteran has helped out a ton.
The Veteran's Administration is set up to take care of anyone and everyone who has served in the military. Some of those programs include housing, job skills training, medical care, and substance abuse intervention. The best program that they have, in my opinion, is the VA home loans. I would love to be able to borrow money with those terms.
