The avocado prices now fluctuate with imports from Mexico. Apparently, The USDA now has Ag Inspectors who are stationed in Mexico. Which would be an interesting job, to work for The USA Federal Government, but you live and work in Mexico. The USA is now able to "price fix" the avocado market by controlling the amount of fruit on the market. The USA government can reduce availability to raise the price and help the US growers, or at different times, flood the market and lower the price to encourage sales. I would suspect that large grocery companies like Albertsons and Krogers have some level of influence over the size of their allotment and pricing.
Darn birds eating fruit is a problem. I've asked around. On smaller trees and plants, you can use a net. But with a 25 foot tree, I'm not crazy enough to try to cover the tree with a net. In some commercial orchards, growers use Christmas tree tinsel and compact discs. The glare from the sun messes with the birds. That's not happening either. I'm not climbing a huge tree to decorate it like Christmas all year. There are a few growers who introduced a predator. If I can raise birds of prey, then they would pick off smaller birds, rodents, and maybe even small children in the neighborhood. I'll let you guys know if I get some falcons, hawks, or eagles.
I know that some time ago, a cousin gave me a bag of stone fruit from a trip to one of those "you pick" places. She wasn't thinking. No way can I eat a grocery bag full of fruit before it all spoils. But everyone has sympathy for the single guy. Friends and relatives always try to help you out. So I buried what I didn't eat. That was how I got apricot and peach trees. The weird one is a cherry size plum. It looks like a cherry. It's the same size as a cherry. But it's a plum. Plum flesh and plum seed. The best guess is that some fruit from that stash was a hybrid of sorts, and the seed grew into a weird strain of plum tree.
I would love to own a Falcon (no not the car, although I would turn down a free one). I remember in grade school having to do a report on my favorite animal, and I chose the Peregrine falcon. Maybe some day when my ship comes in (does anyone ever say that anymore?) and I buy a ranch to house all my cars, I will buy a Falcon or two, and keep the mice/rodent/bird population down.
It looks like this week will be a time to stay inside and keep hydrated up here in the North State. They are forecasting 110+ for Redding Monday and Tuesday. It is a good thing that I will be headed to the office and having my employer pay for cooling costs instead of working from home.
On a lighter note, my mentor came over today to help with electrical problems with the Bronco. We found that a prior repair had mis routed the wiring for the rear window and caused it to be caught between the torsion bar and the tailgate skin. With one wire severed and the other almost, no wonder the rear window would not go up or down. We got that fixed and the wires routed correctly and I can now use the cargo space on the Bronco. The next project will be to re-wire all of the add on accessories correctly so I can use the air compressor, both winches, and the auxiliary battery.
The good news is that both Super Duty’s are running just fine,
I grew up in Westwood up by Mount Lassen, I had cousins that lived in Anderson. I remember going there in the summer, man it was HOT there. Like here though low humidity. The forecast for here this coming week is high 80s to low 90s with Tuesday being the hottest day at 96°. I'm not looking forward to those temps but, better than the 110° temps they are predicting for your area.
The temp right now is 70 in San Francisco. I've already gone through a Crenshaw melon, a 1/4 dozen bananas, and a pound of strawberries. Blend it together into a nice smoothie. Hoping that the fruit will supply electrolytes and keep everyone hydrated. Especially the seniors. Perfect with a few drops of rum for those who wish to imbibe. I'm still young enough that I could have a few beers to fight off the heat. Older people can't drink as much beer. The kids can't either. I advise against giving beers to young children.
We are somewhere in between. We topped out at 85° yesterday. Today is starting out a bit warmer by about 5° more than it was this time yesterday. We shall see how it goes.
