Bought a cheap laptop from Walmart. It arrived today. Bought 512 micro SD card for the laptop from Amazon. It arrived today, but to a different address. "Was handed to resident" was the description given when I received the email telling me it was delivered. Contacted Amazon, they were going to send a free replacement. Another two day wait. About 5five minutes after I spoke to customer service, the person who received it, knocked on my door and delivered it, unopened. So I quickly cancelled the free replacement. Guess the delivery curse is still in effect...
i did buy one July 4th last year. Still have it, That one is my main computer. This one is one of those cheap Celeron powered slim notebooks with 64gb internal memory. Hence the 512gb micro SD card. Don't really need it but the price was right and it came with a year subscription of MS Office 365. I use Open Office, but free is free. It is light and has an 11.6 inch screen. I can use it to check my emails while playing games on my other laptop.
Amazon has "Prime Day" coming up. Always interesting to see what they mark down. Electronics get a pretty good sale price.
I don't play computer games. My computers are usually just e-mail, typing up reports, viewing PDF files, and web browsing. So I don't need any kind of fast or high tech. In the old days, I liked to copy DVDs. Nobody uses DVDs anymore. The "desktop" setup I have at home is a cheap Chromebox. Which is a joke, compared to all of the fast and powerful computers that other people have.
For my situation, the cheap Amazon Fire android tablet works great. Small enough that I can put it in my pocket. The smallest, cheapest tablet, and it even works with FORScan. Sure, it's really just a downgraded cellphone. But I can't complain for $25.
I would rather save my money for other things. Like leather pants. Or PG&E preferred stock with a 7.55% dividend.
This one is a Gateway, and it was half off, $110 instead of $230. $123 with tax and free shipping. They had four color choices but the blue one (and red one) were the cheapest, and since I don't like red, I got the blue one. I do play video games which allows me to pass the time here, which is why I bought the gaming laptop last July. This computer is perfect for emails and surfing the web. Also allows me to check my emails while sitting in my recliner, which I am doing right now. The big laptop is bulky, heavy, and plugged into the second monitor, speakers, mouse, etc.
One of the perks of MS Office 365 personal, is it increases my one drive capacity to 100 gigs instead of 10. Also, get free Skype for a year. Now if I just had a work from home job, I could actually use that stuff LOL It has excellent battery life of 8.5 hours which is a heck of a lot better than the one hour and fifteen minutes I got with the big laptop, when the power went out.
I just bought a blue camo Bluetooth mouse for it from the Microsoft store which goes perfectly with the blue color of this laptop, and also frees up one of the two USB ports. However, it will not be here until next Wednesday. They have free shipping, but it is not as fast as Amazon's. It is running Windows 10 S which only allows me to install apps from the Microsoft store. I can switch out of it, but it is a one time thing, and I will not be able to switch back. I have only installed Minecraft so far, and it came with Forge of Empires. I'll probably keep it in "S" mode since I use the big laptop for games.
If playing computer games is not your jam, then a Chromebook (or Chromebox) could probably be your thing. I've got a fairly new Chromebook (an HP Chromebook x360 14) that pretty much does everything I need. It's fast, does web stuff real snappy, and I can do all the other stuff I need as well. I got in on sale for ~~ $450. Not as susceptible to virus(es) either.
I am guessing this would be in the same category as a Chromebook. It is nowhere near as robust as the gaming laptop, but it is faster than my Android tablet, and it runs Windows. So, I am happy.
