So I got to thinking today about the FIRST oil change coming up... 25% left on the oil life according to the info from the oil-life indicator, but since it's the first oil change and probably the dirtiest the oil would be because of the braking-in period... I was thinking should I just change the filter right now at 12,000Km and change the filter & oil at the 15,000Km the end of the expected oil life time...??? or do nothing until the oil-life indicator says change the oil...?
I did my first oil change around 1400 miles just to use up the remaining Ford Pass points. I will start doing my own when the odometer hits 5000 miles and then again at every 5k. I have the oil sample kits to send in the samples to Blackstone for an analysis too.
It really depends on what makes you feel more comfortable or what you feel is best for the engine. To me, 7400 miles is more than I would want on a conventional oil, that's what the factory fill is, and much longer than I would want to go for the first oil change. So I would change both oil and filter now. Others strictly go by the IOLM.
With my truck the first oil/filter change was at 1500mi, second at 5k miles. I don't rack up many miles per year on it, and now use a full synthetic with a 5k mi/1 year change interval. Whichever comes first.
I have always changed the oil based on the manufacturer's mileage or the OLM. I've never done the first oil change earlier than recommended. I've never used synthetic unless required by the manufacturer. I typically keep vehicles for 8 to 9 years with 100,000 miles or more. Never had an engine issue.
You won't hurt the engine by changing the oil early nor will you make a meaningful improvement on engine life.
One thing I wouldn't do is change the filter only.
I guess what I am really asking is, do you guys trust the oil-life remaining info and do you go by it... ???
More or less, I usually dont let it go below 30% before i change and that puts me right around 6000-7500 miles.
I just switched over to 5w40 @ 40k....dealer has serviced it since new but no more ford pass points left for free oil changes. I'll take over from here.
You mean to tell me you have 7400 miles on factory oil?
I did the first change at 2000 and thought that was plenty.
Everyone has their own philosophy I guess.
Yes, that is why I am thinking of changing the filter for the 25% left, according to the oil-life info, then changing the filter again and the oil too when it says to change the oil...
What are your maintenance standards? The oil life indicator tells you when the minimum standards aren't being met. New fresh oil measures much better on the protection scale than 7000 mile oil.
On my nearly $90K truck, I change it when I get home from the dealer. Rarely does a new engine hit 100 miles before it has the break in stuff drained and refilled that has rinsed loose all of the casting flash and assembly crud.

Yes, there is a lot more crud for the first oil change, thus my thinking of changing the filter earlier as the oil itself should still be good according to the oil-life indicator...
