So, i was in Atwoods yesterday.... kind of like tractor supply? And i walked by the fluids, of course they dont have diesel oil change fluids, like a lot dont, but coolant, i need coolant as soon as i get the old girl flushed out.... um... the only one i knew i didnt want, now that i swapped cups... was the sca added. They have long life 150,000 mile... in two colors, i think, and some extra heavy duty service stuff rated for 1,000,000 miles 😳.... so, i perused the tech folder, didnt see a coolant spec thread in there.... so yeah... what do i want? Or even, what do i want to avoid like the plague?
My poor coolant system has been very sad ever since my oil cooler went out, i think my old cups might have been contributing. So im gonna flush, and i already have a rrd bypass coolamt filter sitting beside the truck to install.
My Atwoods sells 15w40 and 5w40 diesel oil. Harvest King brand last I remember. I haven't tried it but hear some run it just fine in their 7.3Ls. Fairly cheap dino. I haven't seen their coolant selection. I use TSCs Rotella ELC Cat EC-1 but I know some 99s don't play well with this spec. I want to say pre 4/99 build date was the early cut off for not being able to use ELC if memory serves me right but definitely check on that or someone here will set us straight.
Just like our CousinCarl, I used Rotella ELC concentrate years ago and it has been good. I hope/plan to never flush or drain the coolant ever again.
Any ELC with the CAT EC-1 rating is good to use. At the time, I had a difficult time getting CAT ELC from a Caterpillar location, so I kept my money and bought Rotella ELC from the TSC up the road.
Yes sir, that helps. I wasnt sure if the cat spec was good, or no. We get down the hole on oil spec so much, i wasnt sure how picky the coolant was. That is full strength, at 10.99 a gallon. Figured if it was the right stuff i could get by without spending for the ford, or john deere stuff.
I just put in the coolant filter from RRD. Just a heads up, tighten the lines into the aluminum filter housing with what might feel like too much torque. I snugged them pretty good, didn't want to strip anything, but they are weeping a bit. Still need to go back tomorrow and tighten them up.
