The worst part about the GM’s is the wax coating. Have a 21 2500 for a a work truck and rust popping up already in areas where the wax is starting to go after 1 winter. 7.3 10 speed combo is far superior to the 6.6 Gas 6 speed, no real difference in front end performance or durability I find but I do prefer SFA.
The wax coating has done its job on my 25 yr old HD. Very minor surface rust only. One does need to clean salt off of steel if one wants it to survive. I've seen newer GM trucks with frame cancer so I try to be vigilant. I'm expecting that the SD is at least as durable down there.
Dealer just emailed that the train carrying my SD is in Washington state... Yay.
I test drove a 3500 SRW 6.6 gas. I bought a Ford. Plastic fit was bad on the Chevy. You couldn't get higher then 3.73's. Max towing was 4000 lbs less then my 7.3. The duramax was only 910 lbs more then my 7.3. Hauling was less in both engines. Then there is the RUST issue. My brothers Chevy (GMC) only three years before surface rust and 7 years till it rusted through under the doors. It's not just the Chevy is the UGLY step child, its they are behind in what matters most. Hauling, Pulling, and RUST!
I looked at a 2021 Chevy 3500 6.6 gas crew cab srw compared to my 2021 F350 SCLB SRW 7.3.
I don't think her Majesty, Mary Barra likes trucks. If it isn't on their imaginary electric platform they keep advertising (which is totally fake), then it's not important. At least Ford is smart enough to pay lip service and throw a few bones at BEV, while continuing to emphasize trucks. Barra is the running joke in the industry.
I think all the half tons went the way of the car a long time ago. That is why trucks are wildly popular as DD vehicles these days. I am old enough to remember driving solid axle square body Chevy's, my son even had a K-5 for a while. Now they have brought crazy levels of options to SD trucks and we see lots of half ton guys stepping into them because it isn't the hardship it used to be to drive a HD/SD truck every day. I like this progress to a degree. I like that I can have a truck capable of hard work but comfy enough to drive daily and haul clients in if needed. I didn't buy a loaded up SD because those get ridiculous IMO but I do like the refinement that has trickled down to the lower trims based on the new truck paradigm.

Look at what they did to Cadillac vs what Ford did with Lincoln. Cadillac is now going all electric to compete with Tesla and dying a painfully slow death. Nothing GM makes comes close to competing with Lincoln. Look at the XT6 vs Aviator, look at the Escalade vs Navigator. Set aside the absurd GM design language and simply look at value (features) for the dollar and Lincoln wins every time. It is the exact same for pickups. GM depends on chevy guys buying chevy trucks - they are not competing on features, value, or technology. She came out and said there is no need for adaptive cruise in a heavy duty truck (let alone super cruise). If I was to order a new Silverado 3500HD (again set aside the ugly) I would spend the same for a high country trim as for a platinum trim. I would not get many of the features in the platinum as on the chevy (heated rear seats, adaptive cruise, massaging seats, etc.) and the interior is the same cheap plastic crap from 20 years ago. My last 3 trucks were identical inside from colors to features. 2015 1500, 2017 1500, and 2019 3500 all exactly the same.
This chevy guy is no longer brand loyal. We traded our Buick in on a new Aviator and I am trading my Silverado 3500HD in for an F350 (if it ever gets built).

When the rest of my family worked at GM they had a saying, don't fix it if it sells. So how many years did chevy produce a square truck? I believe based on her management style, she gives the trucks over to someone else. They have put trucks into the mess they are in now. Chevy folks buy Chevy. Those with no brand loyalty drive whatever they want. I read on another site that big semi's will be EV by 2040. I would think this would push GM into all EV sooner then that.
