There is a speedo gear in the transmission that comes out easily once you remove the cable adapter. I downloaded a GPS speed check app and surprisingly my speedo is pretty accurate. It's dead on up to about 50mph and then starts to read a little slow. 65 on the speedo is 68, 70 is 74/75. I'm not sure I can expect it to be much more accurate than that. I can only assume that the PO changed the gear when he put the 31" tires on the truck.
On another note, I'm leaking transmission fluid at the speedometer cable adapter. I took it out of the case and it looked like it had a slot for an o-ring but there wasn't an o-ring on it. There also isn't any seal between the driven gear and the adapter. I fished an O-ring out of a bucket of O-rings I have and put one on the adapter and took it for a drive but it's still leaking. I've looked all over the Internet and it looks like the housing and adapter I have is rare so I haven't been able to find the parts I need or even any information as to whether or not there should be a seal of some sort on the gear itself. I was thinking I might have to stop by an transmission shop and see if anyone there can tell me what I need to seal that up but if anyone on here knows, I'd appreciate any info you have.
Sure. Remove the speedo cable out of the trans or transfer case if it's a 4X4. On the cable's end you will see the gear I referenced. It is held in place by a "C" shaped metal clip. Remove the clip and the gear will slide right off.
And OP, there should be an o-ring on the adaptor but not the gear. If still leaking, you might have installed an o-ring that is too thin walled.

Yeah. That is what I thought too but that is the other type of cable. The cable referenced in this thread does not have a gear at the end. Apparently it is in the housing of the adapter on the tail shaft.
My bad, I should have included a pic in the original post. Here is my speedo gear adapter. There is a metal gear in the trans but it's a metal to metal joint between the gear shaft and the cable adapter so nothing there to stop a leak. Seems like there should be something there?
