My speedometer doesn’t work so I crawled under the truck today and found that the screw-on collar that should hold the cable to the transmission is broken and someone had tried to hold it on with zip ties. The problem is that when I look up the speedometer cable for this truck it doesn’t have a screw on end at the transmission so I don’t think ordering that cable is going to help. Anybody have any suggestions on where I can get the right cable or is the transmission wrong for this truck?
I bought a few on Amazon and had to send them back because they were the wrong length or built with crappy metric center piece that is slightly too small. John made me one that fit great and was so smooth it got rid of the jumpy speedo needle issue.
Good luck! That cable didn't work for me because when they mfg it in asia, they use metric stock for the square pin and it stripped out the corresponding piece in the tailshaft (like yours). So go ahead and give it a try but I hope you have an extra tail piece and time to drop the tail end to clean out the metal. Also, did you measure the length of the cable first? They don't like to bend too far...
I'll measure the cable ends on the old and new cables before I install to be sure they are the same size. As for length, it's the same length as the one with the wrong end on it so I just assumed that was the right length. I'll see if I can pull mine out and measure it if it ever stops raining here :-)
Cable came in and the install went pretty smoothly. The internal cable ends were exactly the same size as the one I removed and seemed to fit well so I don't think I have anything to worry about there. The only issue/complaint is that the new cable is slightly longer than the old cable so it doesn't route quite as cleanly as the OEM but other than that, no complaints. The speedometer is working fine for now but is a bit off due to the 31" tires I suspect. Overall I'm very happy with this cable.
As of a couple years ago when I retired, Ford still made different tooth count speedo cable gears. They may still.
Not sure there is a speedo gear on that cable. Can you tell me how to remove/replace the gear on a straight cable? I tried to do this when I installed a shorter rear gear.
