Buddy of mine has a '17 F250 crewcab, apparently a stripper model with no options. He wants a brown leather steering wheel, would prefer to keep the factory airbag. I see there were a few options for these - active steering, adaptive cruise control, and steering wheel heat. Will any of those (the heat, especially) work if the new wheel's donor had them? Will any other vehicles' wheels (say, a Transit, or a Mustang, or hell, a Stinkin' Continental) work and retain airbag functionality? What about without keeping airbags?
A subforum search for "steering wheel" turned up nothing relevant, mostly build tracking threads. Look, I've been using forums since the mid 00's, and I get it, but when the search engine doesn't work right or turns up threads containing nothing except the OP being told to search... What, then, is the point of replying at all?
I'm far from in the know on this but I would think Adaptive steering would be a no. A steering wheel from a truck that had Adaptive cruise would probably work, but the Adaptive cruise function would not without additional parts $$$. Heated steering wheel is doable but also requiers additional parts and the 8" Sync 3. https://www.boostedgreygoosedesigns....85e5y9fucq5ch2
A steering wheel swap is actually pretty simple. Where you might start having issues is the brown leather, I'm not sure which models came with those. I went with a black leather swap, no heat, no adaptive cruise and it was a straight swap. What color is his air bag and steering wheel now? The threads you'll find regarding a steering wheel swap reuse the air bag from the original vehicle so, even if you find a brown leather steering wheel, you're going to be installing a black plastic air bag cover. If brown leather is really the goal without really messing with the rest of the truck's electronics, you might want to find a local upholstery shop and see if they can cover the original steering wheel with something nice. If black leather is acceptable, the basic Lariat steering wheel can be had for about $350 and the swap takes all of 20 minutes.
With a steering wheel swap, heat and/or paddle shifters can be added; adaptive steering cannot. F150 wheels work, Super Duty wheels work. You'll probably have to swap out the buttons with your existing ones. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...heel-swap.html
Hopefully the link above works. He's done a few neat upgrades to his f250. This one is the lariat steering wheel swap. The price may be different now, but super easy install.
Thanks yall! He's ok with the King Ranch brown and the original airbag. Laughed at my suggestion of a heated wheel. Where I live, it gets below freezing, but his town saw a low of perhaps 5C last year. He doesn't use cruise at all, and active steering... hm, Ford itself calls it adaptive steering and it appears to be a variable ratio. I would've thought "active" meant it did the steering for you. IMO, the former is a convenience; the latter is a hazard. Raptor is interesting but no brown.
