So a few weeks ago i decided to get the 6.0 fan clutch situation straightened out. I removed the 7.3 clutch and installed a new 6.0 clutch from napa. I have no idea if this fixed my former not working fan clutch issue or not. I ran it a few days and decided to reinstall an egr valve for safe measure. I pulled the sinister blockoff plate and tightened a used valve into the hole and plugged it in. Since then all ive done is pull my camper. It pulls fine and the fan clutch is working perfect. I saw 226 once pulling 7 miles at 6% on a 95 degree day but it kicks in at 218 and cools it right down. Since we got to pigeon forge im noticing some lag and it doesnt want to build boost without the load. I can get to 18psi but mostly hangs in single digits. It definately made 27psi with the camper attached.
Truck is an 03 drw
Strategy is vxap2n2
Map is around 14 koeo
hits almost 4000psi icp
Ipr duty cycle is around 23% at idle
ive noticed since i plugged in the egr the turbo will sweep at idle from 15 to 85% and it doesnt produce the steady 03 whistle it used to. I want to unplug the egr but i need the fan to work. Since i plugged the egr back in, could a kam reset fix this? The egr function shouldnt effect the boost since theres no egr cooler in the truck at all, but its been screwy since i put the egr back in. Any suggestions? The x4 im using doesnt show ebp but that should be inferred anyway. Any suggestions?
Now im sitting here after some driving and vgt duty cycle is at .5 constant. Its not doing the sweeping anymore like it was. Truck seems ok at low throttle but when i get after it the lag is pretty pronounced.
I checked for leaks last night, couldnt come up with any. This almost has to be egr related since thats what changed. It was a used egr and was clean when i dropped it in, but it should just be giving a reading to the pcm for the fan and the valve shouldnt be causing a boost leak. I think ill try the kam reset when we get back to the camper. Do i have to wait the 10 minutes before driving? Or can i unhook the batteries and all that and do the reconnect/startup later when we go to leave again later this evening?
I don't think the EBP is inferred, but that's one of the easy things to check, along with the vacuum line going to the top of the passenger valve cover. Pull the EBP sensor and run a piece of weedeater string down the tube to make sure it's unblocked. Do the same with the stub going to the valve cover after you remove that hose. And check that hose for cracks/hole. Either of those will mess with your turbo. Other than that, some of the guys here can help.
BTW, a plugged up EBP or broken/plugged hose are very common on trucks our age. Soot just builds up over the years. If you've never cleaned those tubes before, I wouldn't be surprised at all. Mine was clogged and had the same symptoms you described. Thought I needed a turbo. Weedeater string later, all was great. This is just wild speculation, but I wonder if deleting the EGR keeps more soot in the exhaust.

I replaced it with the manifold about 2 years ago. Ill have to see if i can turn something up, i didnt pack the trimmer for vacation. The egr is downstream of the ebp, but i would think having the egr would make more soot.
How old is the turbo? Has it been cleaned lately? You could just have a stuck plate in the turbo.
Ill have to pull the turbo when i get home. It pulls the camper fine so im not going to get into that much of a deal at a campground. Its been a few years, but it was good right up until i installed the egr valve.
Theres a video with the veins audibly sweeping, so i know thats happening. The x4 shows 15-85%. Im going to try the vgt relearn today and see where that gets me. I hate to throw a set of filters at it when these only have about 3000 miles on them. The lag does seem more pronounced above 2500rpms but it was fine before egr, so thats making me think its computer or electrical related.
Looks like ive found my problem. My reflective insulation back my the driver side flex joint is now black. Its really tough to see that far in there, but its either soot or undercoating, but im thinking soot since its not both sides. Im planning on cleaning the turbo since i have to pull it to remove the up pipes.
I just Rewatched my video and caught my daughter calling the dog a butthole.
