My injector replacement adventure thread
And so, on my drive to work on the worst night of that weather, my fuel gelled up. And when I changed my fuel filter when I went back for my truck in the parking lot a few days later I discovered the dreaded black fuel filter of injector o-ring failure. A check of the oil dipstick confirmed I was extremely low on oil

So, after carefully looking over all my options nearly every spare moment I had for a week, i made the harder decision. Rather than just toss new exterior orings on the injectors and hope there was no unknown previous damage or galling done during the 5 miles I tried to putt to safety with no post fuel filter fuel pressure; that I would instead have the injectors sent in to someone who knows what they are looking at better than my untrained eyes could hope to discover. But why stop there?
Doing all that work, it seems like a pity to not spend the extra coin to jump to bigger injectors when the opportunity may not come again for years, and potentially not have the current availability of excellent vendors we currently have. Plus, by a stroke of good planning, we kinda actually had the funds available, with room for more PM items. So bring on the suffering!
So the obvious job at hand will be pulling injectors, sending them off, having them rebuilt by a very reputable builder, and putting them back in. But also, "While I'm there..."
So we all know to pull injectors the 3 intersecting fluids have to be drained; oil, coolant, and to a much lesser extent fuel. Since my truck still has the original coolant hoses (that all still pass the look, feel, squeeze tests) I'm replacing them all just due to their 22 years of age. And the original thermostat. And while I'm at it I'll swap to ELC, yay no more test strips! After price comparison between local and online, all new Gates hoses can be had for 1/3 the cost of local sources thru RockAuto
Ahh the smell of new rubber
Also while the coolant and oil are drained I'll be rebuilding the oil cooler replacing it's original (non-leaking) seals. And of course going all SSJ and spraying some color on that darn cast iron. Yay for southern trucks with 107k miles!
And heck while they are nearly all off with the valve covers anyways, why not toss in the set of Riff Raff boots to replace the thinner and also aged originals.

Also finally replace the original HPOP hoses with those nifty CNC fab ones that have been sitting in the box since before the hectic mess of moving
And because I'm already ordering hoses from the same Rockauto warehouse, I can finally splurge and add that green diesel fuel cap to replace that boring old black one that looks like it belongs on a gasser. Finally, without paying $17 in shipping just for a $5 cap
Also ordered new injector bolts, glow plugs, fuel filter, and a new 6637 from RiffRaff
Yes, they pass the real vs counterfeit sniff tests
Just cause I'm getting stuff shipped, may as well add something bigger to the box, like a spare 6637
And since I won't be driving the truck anywhere for at 4 weeks, now's as good a time as any to replace the rear brakes after my inspection showed the originals are starting to pit and have started to groove. So Powerstop's Tow Performance Z36 kit it is.
Fresh stopping power for the bigger sticks
Since I like my GearHead tunes on my TS6 I'll have them update my chip to single shots while all the injectors are in the mail
And here's hoping when I pull injectors I don't discover any cracked cups 🤞 Stay tuned for updates as they happen
Take your time, have fun with it. Also, don't forget the cushion on the radiator support!
What injector size will go well with the mods you have?
I'm going with 160/0 for high atomization and simplicity.

So Monday night after 10 minutes I had the filter off, all the CAC tubes off, 42 pin disconnected, CCV off, and was about to pull off the doghouse and remove batteries. Then I got called back into house by wife to spend the next 3 hours sitting together in front of the tv hanging out. Which killed all my truck motivation after popcorn, and holding a remote all night.
Tuesday after dropping kids at school I couldn't sleep, and tossed and turned all day at the old house only to get 2 hrs of known sleep before school was out. Since it was going to rain that night I spent my available time spreading lawn treatments before work Tuesday night.
Today I was beyond exhausted and slept the entire school day. Once we got to the house I had 15 minutes till dinner, so I removed the doghouse, map bracket, and drivers side valve cover. A quick peek underneath revealed everything in place, and visually all hooked up. Then I had to grab the Dawn and clean up for dinner before work tonight. Luckily I have the next 2 nights off, so I plan on getting caught up on the truck work and getting stuff into the mail.
