I have never tinted an entire windshield and do not plan to, but WI law does allow for tint to be applied above the "AS1 Line". On my last truck, I had 5% film on the top, but that was too dark for me, as it was hard to see traffic signals without ducking below the film. I just had 20% installed on my F350 and I think that is just right. Can see through it just fine, and is still dark enough to block the sun around the visors. The legal limit on side front windows in WI is 50%, and I had that on my last truck but it was way too light, in my opinion. I had 20% installed on my F350 and like it so far. No problems seeing through it at night, and dark enough to block the sun during the day.
The clear is a great alternative if you are trying to only "break one law at a time". It does NOT make anything darker, it does however reduce the UV which is where the heat comes from. My Mustang (clear since day 4) is amazing, small cabin, much cooler and the dash or steering wheel is never skin melting hot. And I have nearly no fading of any of the internals. Car has been outside it's whole life and a sunshade anytime it's going to sit for more than a day.
With that said, these trucks with the dark windshield look AMAZING!!!!
I tinted the front to match the factory rear. But at night its so dark where I live, I often have to roll the windows down to see turning into the driveway. Definitely the windows come down when backing up in the dark. They're perfect during the daytime.
I got 50% Xpel IR on sides and rear. It blocks 85% of infrared. For $100 more I could have blocked 95%. Most films do a fair job blocking ultraviolet, which isn't the heat, (that's IR) but is hard on the eyes and fades your interior. You need to ask to make sure your film will block infrared. With the 50% the truck sort of looks factory, the front door windows are still lighter than the rears so most folks don't even realize there is a tint.
As for the front I got a 5% strip across the top. Keeps the sun out, and it blocks IR, too. Leaves the windshield clear to see. And I like the way it looks. Others maybe not.
