Can't get away with tinted windshields here in CA. So I went with the "clear blue" for the wrong and a 40% on the sides. The clear is a UV blocking film that you cannot see but does slightly change the look of the windshield, but I can't really say how it looks different, maybe like it is just a little more thick. Really cuts down the heat and your dash is never skin melting hot. I have had it on my 2013 mustang since brand new, the car lives outside and the black interior still looks good as new.
You should stay within the legal limits for tint. If you run somebody over their lawyer will have a hay day with you and your illegal tint. Especially on the windshield.
Had a rock chip fixed and it creates a small “bubble” type of spot at the repair. Not a big issue and not something worth getting the entire windshield redone.
NJ is very strict on window tint. This is the first vehicle I've ever done front windshield tint on, I had ceramic 80% applied. It is nearly invisible. Can't tell its tinted, not even at night. I find driving with it is more comfortable, I don't feel my shirt heat up when the sun is low, there is less glare, and heat. I've noticed the inside stays cooler after being parked. Careful though, there is a series of 2021 trucks that have a recall requiring removal of the windshield, so if you fall into that group and plan on getting the recall done, you may want to hold off.
I did the side windows at 50% and have not had problems with the law here, and my town is very strict.

For the last 7 years I have been getting a full UV clear tint block put on my front windshields. Makes a huge difference in temp but zero obstruction of vision. Ask your tint shop about this. Cost is usually $99.
I know with 80%, the only difference at night is less glare. Totally invisible otherwise. Seems the same as before visually, with the biggest gain being less heat on my torso while driving during the day. I had to take the CPL filter off the dash cam, it was making a strange ring from polarization i think. My polarized sunglasses dont have that effect though. 50% is what i have on my side windows, and personally would not go that dark on the front. but that's just me.

is "clear" 99%-100%? or is it something like 75-90?
Here in AZ where the sun is brighter than sunglasses windshield tinting is common.
I bought the best tint possible (greatest heat reduction) for the 4 side windows (had the fronts tinted to match the back with factory tint + tint added) and had the windshield done. I don't think anyone can look at the windshield from outside and tell that it has tint on it. From the inside you can detect a slightly blue tinge to it.
Definitely worth adding in the Valley of the Sun and maybe in your neighborhood
I've been running 50% for about 10 years. I even got a dermatologist exemption but never got around to filing it with the DMV. My skin is slightly fair, but I got it for the insane Arizona heat (already at 99 today!!)
If you're that concerned, check if your DMV offers any kind of exemption, then find a derma or ophthalmologist to convince (not hard). I can also tell you that nobody cares or notices at all anyway except you when you got in that hot sun baked car. It's still hot, but it makes a huge difference that is far worth any negligible 'risk'.
Pro tip, if you wear polarized sun/glasses then only certain films will work or else you will see 'rainbows'. Not so bad on the rest, but no so good on the windshield. If anything, that's what should be illegal.
If your purpose is to keep the inside cooler, the clear UV protective films are a good choice. If your purpose is to look cool from the outside then choose a film that is within the legal limits for your state.
