I am wanting to tint my front windshield. Whole windshield 70 or 50 percent. Then a 5 percent strip over that for the above AS1 line. I am getting the Platinum so it has the auto headlamps and rain sense wipers. Will the tinting, if applied correctly, affect these features at all? Want to make sure I know before I go thought the whole install process. Thanks
I've always tinted my windshields and have no issue with the rain sensing wipers or auto high beams.
I was always told that doing a tint strip over the windshield tint will look bad. As the tint does apply seamlessly to other tint as it does to glass. So I always stayed away from the strip on my tinted windshields but if you do it, I'd like to see.
Make sure they cover the dash well when applying, ( they have to soak the windshield & keep it wet while applying and shrinking the film ) My tint shop said the brain is right under the dash and they have had a few problems with it getting wet and causing problems for them... They wanted me to sign a waiver for any damage electrical. I held off until I can inquire at a few other shop's.
50% has hardly any effect at night but really helps in early morning sun glare/rise if traveling east on your commute. You can get a medical waiver if needed in any state.
I have my full windshield tinted with ceramic 30% and 5% carbon all the way around. I love it but it makes driving a night a little more challenging. It does throw off the headlight sensor every now and then but its not something I cant live with. Could be be because its 30%
Yes tinting the whole windshield is illegal everywhere, but I've never been stopped for it. So it's more for you to decide if you think it'll be enforced where you live or if you live in a state with inspections. Also in order to measure the tint on a windshield, you have to have a two piece tint meter which is expensive. Most policemen have a one piece tint meter that slides over the top of the side windows and cannot measure the windshield or back window.
I've always done 50% on my windshields and never had a problem with night time visibility. I do 5% on the sides and that's a different story, it defineitly affects night time visibility. I have been considering going darker (35%) on my next windshield.
Here is a list of Tint laws by State. Only three States allow tint on the entire windshield. Ohio, South Dakota, and Hawaii. The three of them state that it must allow 70% of light to come through.
All the other 47 states either allow no tint below the AS1 line, or non at all. Window Tint Percentage Laws In The US By State
