They are! Had to do that on my rig not too long ago. The flopping around is probably due to a worn out knuckle seal. Recommend doing the seals at minimum, and see if the needle bearing needs it too. On my truck, both sides had movement in the u-joints and needed seals, but only one side required a new needle bearing. Details in my maintenance thread below. Parts I used listed in Post #1
Anybody have the service manual or how to diagnose the ESOF? I know the 4wd worked before the trans swap but not now. I verified that I plugged everything back in and that the fuse under the dash is good. The only other noticeable symptom is that the 4x4 and 4lo lights don't prove out when you turn the key on.
Still haven't figured this out. All fuses, relays, and power sources to the control box are good. The relays do not click when I turn the switch; so guess that's the next thing to check.
This 4x4 issue is starting to tick me off. Everything worked just fine before the transmission swap, but now nothing. I've checked the relays, dash switch and several circuits while trying to follow the service manuals; everything checks out good but still nothing.
Nevermind! I'm just an idiot! When I first noticed the 4x4 wasn't working I checked the two connections at the t-case thinking I didn't get them connected. Well they looked fine, so I moved on to the next check. I just went back to check the plugs for corrosion and sure enough I didn't have the upper plug all the way in. Everything works now.
Hmm, looks like it's been a few years since updating this thread. Unfortunately I'm not here with good news. I just found oil in my coolant. My first thought was injector cups but I guess it could also be the oil cooler. Any way to narrow it down?
It’s not a bad job to reseal the oil cooler. Remove all of the oil cooler. Don’t take the shortcut seen in some videos. One of the guys here didn’t remove the front part of the cooler and broke his front cover during reassembly. Check the sticky for coolant flush too.
I've done the oil cooler on my '97. I just hope it is the cooler and not the injector cups. My wife really needs this rig for a trip next week. So I don't have the time for that fix if it's not the cooler. I've ordered both the seal kit and a new cooler.
