That was with the engine cold and off. Before I read this, I pulled just over a quart of fluid out to get it to the cold mark. I got the truck up to temp and checked again with the engine running. The fluid is right at the transition from cold to hot. One noticable thing is it was much harder to get it to move at all.
I would expect it to be harder to get it to move. It's now another quart low. I can tell you how to read the stick more accurately than reading it with the engine off and the trans cold. Read the stick on another vehicle. That will be AT LEAST as accurate to tell you the level of trans fluid in your trans. Checking the level in a cold trans is meaningless. And it is even worse with the engine off.
As I said last night, I did get the trans up to temp and the level was fine with the engine running. I really don't think this is a simple fluid level issue. This weekend I plan to drop the pan to see if there's anything in the bottom and make sure the filter is seated properly.
I dropped the pan today and found a pile of metal shavings in the bottom. So I threw it back on and dropped the trans.
As much as I'd like to get a BTS, I'll never have the luxury of driving to his shop if I need work and I can't afford to be down for a couple months to ship it back and forth. So I think I'm going with a Ford reman.
Yeah, I saw the HD one on the website. It's $1300 more, but I just don't think I need it. The previous owner snow birded from Alaska pulling a travel trailer and this original trans made it 19 years and 305k miles. The most this will see behind it is probably my Bronco. I don't want to cheap out, but I also don't want to buy more than I need.

Darrin, how ya been bud? Long time....annnnnyways, yeah this is the voice of reason I think. I'm like you. The BTS is a fantastic transmission and Brian has a great reputation, but in your situation, it makes sense. Most have had good luck with the Ford Reman, It is dealer covered, and you'll out live the trans before the truck would be my guess. Good on you for pulling it. That was the wisest thing I think....not that it matters what I think. Keep us posted!

Understood and agree with your point of view.
I wanted to make sure you were aware of the HD as a lot of owners in search of a Ford replacement 4R100 are not. Having options to choose from is always better than "one way" or "I wish I had known."
I was really hopeful your filter was slightly dislodged as I mentioned earlier, but it is what it is.
Thanks for the input guys. I just ordered the standard reman. I definitely would have went with the HD if we had a bumper pull trailer, but ours is a 5th wheel so towing duty remains the job of the F250. This is just mommas school bus.
So I'm getting ready to order a bunch of parts from Riffraff, and am wondering about the Cooler Bypass Tube Eliminator. Is this worth it? Is the bypass tube really a problem? I'm planning a new 6.0 cooler to go with the new trans, just wondering if I should grab this as well.
No worries. I just remembered to use the search feature and found a thread on the pros and cons of the bypass tube. Yeah, I don't know much about autos either, but I don't think my wife would like driving this with a ZF6 swap (can't say that I've seen that done in an Excursion, but everything is possible right). How's that dipstick adapter working? This Ex actually doesn't leak from there, but if it ever does, I know a guy that can make a fancy new adapter.
Edit: I just read your signature and you no longer have the EC F250. Isn't that the one you put the adapter on?

Yeah it was my F-350. I HATED to sell it, but we needed a crew cab for our growing family. I bought my current truck and kept the other (Ike) for a few months and then sold him to a guy down in South Texas. He went to a good home LOL. I may need another adapter. Lemme know if ya make anymore. Good to see you around here.
