Sounds like there was a relay somewhere in your old truck that had the 12V power run to it and the toggle activated that relay. Might be contained within the strobe? If so you'll probably still need to run the 12V power wire to the battery and then use the upfitter as your toggle.

If there's an external relay you can delete that and just use the appropriately rated upfitter switch.
