Enging knocks till revved only when starting, thoughts?
New here and hoping to figure out issue on my 08 5.4. Had it for 6yrs and for over 4yrs when I start it it knocks/lifters, till I rev up then once oil gets pumping its good until I shut it off again and if I start it back up within 5 min of turning off its fine but if I wait any longer I have to rev up again to get oil pumping. Haven't check oil pressure yet but was just wondering everyones thoughts?
IIRC there is a check valve somewhere in the pressure side of the oil system that's supposed to keep oil in the pressure side to fight this issue - basically oil should end up being immediately available for everything. If you're getting lifter noise, I'd say that check valve has failed open and your oil is slowly running back through the pump. Pretty common failure in engines of all types, I have had several in my lifetime that did this, most of them I didn't care enough about to fix the issue, they were beater vehicles anyway.
I don't know enough about the internal workings of a 5.4 to tell you if it's built in, or if it's supposed to be a part of the oil filter like GM did for a while. If it's built in then it's likely going to be a messy job to fix it.
You are putting in enough oil, correct? Being low on oil will also cause this to happen.
Of course, depending on how many miles are on your truck, it could just be worn out.

I've had to change oil and filter every 2 to 3000 miles for several yrs now or oil light will come on at an idle but will go off once very little rpms are given. But doesn't do it with fresh oil.

Makuloco specifically recos 5W-30 in these engines in one of his videos. 5W-20 was merely for CAFE, and not the types that have all been shuttered due to panicdemic.
edit: I presently have to run 10W-40 in my '08 5.4 to prevent chain slap. It's not ideal but its a lesser-of-the-evils situation: chain slap or possibly starve other parts of engine from heavy oil. I keep trying to find time to replace the tensioners (and probably guides)

Oh and I'm gonna guess something else is going on....possibly clogged oil pump pickup from guides in pieces. The bottom of one oil pan:
Worn bearings will cause engine oil pressure to drop. There should be a PID for oil pressure so use Forscan and see what it reads. No amount of guessing is going to help until you verify the actual data.

Sure appreciate the video. Could very well be the tensioners. Going to start on it in a week or two.

It might just be piston slap. The Mod motor pistons aren't really supported well at the bottom of the stroke and their known to have some rattle when cold, some worse than others. My 06 Vic has a 4.6 that rattles every time i start it and it sees the rev limiter daily. I'm pretty sure Ford had TSB on it. Between that, tensioner chain rattle and injector knock, plus your 3V has cam phasers that can rattle, it can be a pain diagnosing some of it.
