I have a 75 390.
I'm not talking about fuel or a carburetor issue. It has a hard time turning over. It struggles to turn over like there is no oil. The reason I'm thinking about oil is that after my truck warms up and I slow to an idle the oil gague drops off to nothing. I don't have any knocking noises but it runs rough until the oil pressure gauge comes back up.
If your motor struggles to turn over only after it is warm check if you have a good enough ground.I hade the same problem.
when its bucking touch the ground wire it might be hot if it is you have a bad ground
It could be timing is too high, heat soak in the starter,i fixed a hot start problem on my 74 F100 by changing all the cables to the solenoid fr/battery and fr/solenoid to starter with larger cables. Also i had a starting problem once on one of my vehicles, and it turned out to be a film of oil between the starter and bellhousing causing it not to get a good ground.
Sounds like this is more of an oil problem. I would take the pan off and then clean the pickup screen, and if pressure is still low, try replacing the oil pump. Otherwise a low end rebuild might be needed.
Check to make sure that the chassis ground strap is still hooked from the cab to the engine. It could be an unrelated problem with the gauge and maybe the ground for the ignition.
When does the pressure come back? When still idling or do you have to rev it up to regain pressure.
I am curious, because you should have some lifter noise if you have no pressure.
Have you checked the actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to see for sure what you have?
