I've done my research and I've concluded that I need to replace my injection pump. After some looking around, I've found that Autozone offers a remanufactured delphi pump for ~$553 with a $150 core. Is this a decent option? Is there any way to get cheaper than this without running into reliability problems?
That is a great question. On my equipment, I have to factor in the aggravation factor of having something go out, even if it is under warranty. In this case, the pump would be warrantied but the individual is still dealing with the R and R...... What is that aggravation factor worth to you? I'd rather pay a bit more and have a pump that would last until I was ready to trade off the truck.
I would spend a bit more and get from a reputable source if it was me. There are a few different places that focus soley on the performance of these old beasts, and while prices are a bit higher, you will know youre getting real quality vs. a pump put together by a parts changer. For the price of that one and the core charge, you can have an R&D pump for instance.
For the best quality pump job, phone a heavy truck/equipment or ag tractor shop and ask where they send their pumps locally for rebuilding. I'm not near there, but I know their rep and I sent my pump to Oregon Fuel Injection, they did a good job, personalized service, and a very fair price.

I've also heard very good things about Oregon fuel injection, if you're just after a stock rebuild there's no reason to send it to any of the big names. You just need a shop that knows what they are doing.
Ask them if they install steel or ceramic sleeves in the advance bore, if they just overbore or replace the housing spend your money elsewhere.

If you look on their website, it's no two-bit side-line backyard operation. If it has to do with ANY type of diesel injection, they definitely cover it all. They got my pump overhauled and shipped back to me quick too.
