Hey guys my injection pump is leaking and im going to either look for a shop to replace the pump and time the engine or replace the pump myself and just get the shop to time it. Im trying to think of as many questions to ask the shops to see if any of them have the knowledge to work on a older IDI truck. Can someone please tell me what pump we have in these trucks so i can see if the shop even knows what it is? And if anybody can think of any other question i should ask let me know.
Also is it a good idea to replace the injectors at the same time as the pump or should i just leave the injectors until i need to replace them
As a general rule I replace the nozzles with a pump replacement unless they are fairly new. A nozzle can fail and trash a cylinder and you won't realize it untill it's to late. They are a wear item on a motor.
If a pump shop doesn't know anything about a db2 pump then they are not the ones to get the work done at. Sometimes it is cheaper to just replace with a reman. I get mine from the IH dealer in Louisville Ky. I have never had a problem with them and if I did they would make it good and they haven't been to high. Most have been in the $400's.
the pump is leaking around the throttle shaft on the side of the pump. I had a thread a couple of weeks ago about the leaking pump and the input i got was pretty much the pump needs to be replaced and isnt repairable.
Well i called 10 diesel repair shops in the area around here and only 3 new what a Ford IDI was and even knew the pump model before i even metioned it.
Out of the 3 shops, one tried to tell me that changes in the timing dont affect the 7.3 much. and that they dont time the truck after the pump is installed. they start the truck and if they see smoke the will just advance the timing a "hair" to stop the smoke and the guy told me this is completely normal due to engine wear. and that doesnt sound right to me so pretty much he isnt getting my service. He wanted $900 for that.
The next too shops seemed very knowledgable and 1 shop wants $635 for the pump and it will take about 3 hours of labour and he says after pump, labour, shop fees and taxes its going to cost me $1010.91.
The last shop said it will cost $675 for the pump, and $252 for about 3 hours of labour. He didnt give me a total after taxes but said it should be around $1000.
So out of those 2 shops they both seem like they know what they are doing. and the prices they quoted me are pretty much the same ( around $1000). The only difference is one shop can do it on tuesday and have my truck back to me on tuesday and the other can only do it on thursday.
So with all that said i think im going to go with the shop that can do it on tuesday becausae i want this done ASAP.
One last question...would it be a good idea to change the injectors at the same time or should i wait until im sure my injectors need replacing?(i have no idea how long the current ones have been on there)
Honestly the first shop did not seem far off at all, thats a common thing that happens with engine wear, they smoke and the timing needs adjustment. They probably set the timing retarded when installing the pump, and gradually advanced it until the truck stops smoking. Makes sense to me atleast.
Unfortunately he is in Canada.......MWFI would probably cost as much after border/broker costs...... Check with your local IH/Navistar dealer for his best price......
If your leak is at the throttle shaft...... I just assisted a guy in Norway to fix his. It is a bit involved for a novice, but should be a pc of pz for a tech at a Stanadyne dealer listed below.......

thanks im going to call 1 of those shops tomorrow and see if my injection pump is fixable instead of buying a new one. would it be worth it to fix the leak in my existing pump? or just buy new?, i just dont want to fix the leak and then have it start leaking a few months later
Quick question about the "G" injectors? Arent those for a turbo only model? Or will they work for my 7.3 idi N/A with the new injector pump turned ahead?
id go with the bb codes if i were you, the Gs iirc are the ones with the early emissions on them. But yes i do believe that they are the turbo ones and will work in the N/A
