Bosch CP4 pump

Anyone encountered this problem?

https://www.forthepeople.com/class-action-lawyers/cp4-pump-failure-lawsuit/

Appears to possibly apply to our vintage rigs...

While it is ok to talk about the various failure points on the pump, lawsuits or talk of them in detail needs to be elsewhere.

I couldn't care less about the lawsuit. I'm interested in why there's a dearth of info and posts about these pump failures. Is it happening? What are signs of the failure, can it be detected somehow prior to actual failure? Are there techniques to prevent the failure?

forthelawyers.com ... while probably more accurate, just doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Anyway, where there is smoke, there is fire. And the Bosch CP4 pump has been a flame for quite a while.

What I want to know is, do the same issues that the CP4 is famous for, also manifest themselves in the revised CP4.2?

Make sure your pump gets adequate lubrication. If the fuel you use is low on lube additives, like most ULSD is, then us an additive to boost the lube properties. Check the frame rail filter for sparkles (AKA aluminum shavings) If you find shavings it won't be long before the whole fuel system needs replacing.

If by "them" you mean the people behind "forthepeople", the answer is no, I do not know them... anymore than I know why you are banging your head against a wall.

ummmm... you political types need to take a pill and go someplace else....

Can we get some info on the CP4 fuel pumps? Do we have the same exposure as the GM CP4 pumps? Are ours better somehow? Do we have a newer model?

oh - if you are still worried about where to find info (without our legal-bengals getting bothered), check out Truck Trend - they just posted the announcement of the class action suit agains GM.

I would say so, we use the same ULSD fuel.

Ford uses a lift pump, I've heard GM does not.

It's my understanding the 15+ trucks use the CP4.2 which runs a higher pressure than the 11-14's and also has a special coating on the rollers. Not sure if the 17+'s got a newer revision or not.

The CP4 issue is a real problem. I had studied it in length as I have direct experience with one puking on my last Duramax. The long a skinny is it doesn't matter if you have a lift pump or not as the lack of lubricity in U.S. diesel is what causes them to wear out and blow which throws metal shavings in into the entire fuel system. Granted a lift pump will keep fuel pressure in the rails which will ensure your pup does not go dry, but these CP4's still go without warning. Bosch designed these around Euro diesel standards and the American big 3 know they are any issue.

I don't use fuel additives, but I might start. Anyone else us em? Specifically because of this? Should I make a new thread?

I use Fords pm22a just for lubrication of the high pressure fuel pump.

There are tons of threads in the 6.7 L diesel forum regarding additives
