Door Ajar Wire/Plug

I’m installing an alarm and I need to tap into a plug or wire that tells me a door is open.

I’m guessing I can also tap into the wire that provides power to the dome light.

Can someone point me in the right direction on where (ideally under the dash) the wire/plug can be found.

Of course pictures would be great.

Listor - thank you.

I read through the linked thread and could still use some help.

As a reminder, I’ve got an XL supercab with a dome light in the center of the cab.

I noted that the driver’s front door attaching to the lock is a black wire and a yellow with a black tracer wire.

On the passenger front door attaching to the lock is a black wire and a black with pink tracer wire.

On the passenger side, the wires terminate in a plug (along with the speaker wires) inside the cab below the glove box. The opposite side of the plug travels up the passenger side wall into the dash.

All that said, I’d still like to know where the door ajar wires end up and where I can get a signal for the alarm that tells me a door is open.

@djed , just to be sure you have a 2001 truck correct?

I can get you any wiring diagram and an location of the GEM (under the dash) that you desire from the Ford Service Manuals, but want to make sure I know what I am searching for first. The FSM are not the easiest thing to navigate, well for me anyway. There are others that are much better at it, but I usually manage to stumble around blindfolded until I find what I need to post.

How do aftermarket alarms trigger the siren when the door is opened? You might be able to find an install video on a Super Duty that can give you some ideas. Keep in mind though that the later trucks had a VSM instead of a GEM.

In the thread posted by @Listor , post #3 has a diagram a lot like what I would post for the GEM. I have linked it below in case that will help before I or someone else are able to apply specific help.

Hi Sous,

Yes - it’s a 2001 XL.

As noted, I’d love to figure out which wire carries the signal that tells the truck the door is ajar.

I’ve seen some diagrams that suggest the DG/OG wire coming off pin 11 on the C240a plug going into the GEM is the wire I need but was hoping to get an opinion from someone else that has wired an alarm.

Also, where in the GEM is the C240a plug - I believe there are three plugs.

David, that was qucik!

There is a GEM wiring diagram in the 7.3L PSD Tech Folder under the ELECTRICAL header. To make the search for information easier on you as you have already put a valiant amount of effort into this, I have pasted the GEM diagram below.

GEM Wiring Diagram

C240a is the first page of the GEM wiring diagram. According to the diagram, you are correct in saying that pin 11 is DG/OG. The first two connectors look the same in regard to their securing method, so now you are down to 2 connectors on the GEM. You should be able to figure out which is C240a by the color coded wires and being unique to the connectors.

I know the first page of the GEM wiring diagram says Excursion, so if it doesn't match up with what you have in your truck, I will try to find another one in the FSM. Although, 99% of the information and diagrams go across the SD and Excursion platforms.

As for how someone else would wire an alarm, I cannot help you there.

Well - I tore apart the dash again.

With the dash off, I am able to see the GEM. I noticed there are three open slots on the driver’s side of the box but only the first is filled with a plug.

(yes - I know it’s not fully seated).

The wire colors match up with the diagram linked by Sous except that the left door ajar wire going into pin 16 is Yellow with a black tracer and not black with a yellow tracer. The pin orders seem flipped relative to the diagram. I’m not sure this is a difference between model years or just my perspective.

It’s strange that I don’t have a plug in the other two slots that control the listed features. I know I’ve seen the 4x4 light.

I guess I’m just going to go at this by trial and error.

However, as always, I GREATLY appreciate any and all help/feedback, including especially from Listor and Sous.

I was thinking of your situation today while doing chores around the house...

What is the alarm controller looking for in order to trigger the alarm? Is it looking for 12v hot, is it looking for ground, or is it customer choice?

I will see if I can find a better GEM diagram for a 2001 in the FSM.

Not sure but see attached. It seems like it’s looking for both.

After doing some more digging into wire bundles, I was wrong about the BL/YE - YE/BL. The GEM diagram for 2000 matches my 2001 wires for the C240a plug.

I think what had me confused was that the driver’s side door latch wires are solid black and yellow with a black trace.

There are also these two thick bundles of wires but I’m not sure where they come from and go to. They seem to enter from a conduit above the GEM and lead in the general vicinity behind the bottom of the GEM.

An update for future readers - the DG/OG wire coming off of pin 11 of the GEM is only active when the key is in the on position. Thus it will not serve my purpose of providing a signal to the alarm that the door is open when the truck is parked and the key is in the off position.

When the key is on and the GEM is active, I get 12V off the wire when the door is **closed** but no voltage when the door is open.

Based on some suggestions with the alarm manufacturer, I ended up getting the needed 12V signal from the wire that feeds the dome light (Black with a light blue stripe). There are multiple instances of the black/lt blue wire through the cab (feeding interior lights) but I settled on one of the two in the driver’s side kick panel that came from the driver’s sill. For my alarm, I can’t activate the alarm until the done light (which has a delay timer) goes out.

Hope this helps.
