my brother has a 04 f150 old body style with out trailer tow he's looking to get a small boat so we added a class 5 hitch since he only has the ford 4 wire plug we would like to add a seven wire plug is there a easy way of doing this like buying a plug that you don't have to splice something like unplugging the 4 wire and plugging the seven wire in we would like to add the ford 4 and 7 wire plug
You can go to Ford and get a plug, including a 7 and 4 pin connectors and mounting bracket that is just plug in. The hardest work you have to do is with the ground wire and mounting screws.
YOu don't need the 7 wire plug unless the trailer has elecric brakes. If you do need the 7 wire plug, you will need to add a brake controller and run a wire to it from the plug. Also, if you plan on towing a camper, you would want to add a hot wire to recharge the camper battery while traveling. Neither is a big job if you are mechanically inclined at all.
they make a pigtail connector that will plug right into both the plug and the harnes and connects them. if you cant find one just build one. buy both plugs and simply splice them together, when finished towing, just remove the pigtail and throw it in the glovebox
swing by a parts or trailer store and take a look. Today you can find plugs and converters for just about any situation that just plug into the vehicles existing harness. Most are designed with two pieces. One piece is basically a "t" fitting that plugs into the vehicles wiring harness. Usually no splicing required. The second piece plugs into the "t" and has whatever type of trailer plug you desire and mounts to the hitch or wherever you choose to.
Alot simplier than in the old days of tracing wires and splicing and hoping it would work!!
