I noticed a puddle of oil under my truck this morning.
1993 f250 460 4x4 manual.
I took a look under the truck it looks like it’s coming from somewhere behind the oil filter. Does the filter attach to the oil pump? The entire mechanism behind the filter is wet.
any thoughts or ideas in what is causing this?
Is the filter loose? That would be the first thing to check. Or, it could be from an extra gasket, once in a while during a filter change the old gasket sticks to the block and stays behind and the mechanic doesn't notice. Two gaskets here are not better than one.
Oil flows down and back., due to gravity and wind. That said, it could be valve covers, intake manifold, timing cover, oil pan, or even the oil filter cooler as mentioned before. Possibly all 6 are leaking....I would take it to a truck wash after emptying a can or two of engine degreaser on it. Might as well borrow the UV dye oil leak detection kit from Vatozone. That's how I do it. If you are old-school you could throw some flour or something at it.
Can't really say more other than I've heard from old farts about powdering the engine in cornstarch or flour and the oil leaks will become apparent. I wouldn't do it considering how easy UV dye makes it .
Alright I believe I’ve found my issue. I drained all of the oil and cleaned the area behind the oil filter. Then installed a new filter and new oil and ran the truck for about ten minutes. After closer inspection I could see a steady drip of oil from where the oil filter/oil cooler assembly mounts to the block. So my new question is, do I need to buy a whole new assembly, or is there a gasket b/t the assembly and the block that I can replace?
But there should be a gasket b/t the block and the oil cooler assembly? Also there are coolant lines running to the oil cooler, does that mean I have to drain my radiator and all of my oil to make this fix?
I mean you could just pull the cooler and let the coolant fall where it may. Although the most through way would be to drain rad + lower rad hose. When has a little fresh coolant ever hurt anyone?
I think you can delete the cooler if desired and run a FL-1A filter.
Yeah I’ve seen some videos where guys have deleted the cooler. I don’t know if I want to go that direction. Do I need to be concerned about getting coolant in the oil or vice versa during this process?
