Loose shift stick

I have an original 3 speed on my 1949 f1, and the problem I’m having is the shifter will move all the way to the passenger side (knees) and all the way to the drivers side (knees) anyone know how to tighten this???

My bet is: You're missing the pin holding the shift stick in place. Undo the cap nut for the stick from the shift tower neck and pull the shift stick out. There is a slot milled in order to prevent rotating around as yor stick does. You need to insert either a new pin riding in this slot or repair the slot itself first, as it might be worn beyond use. If so, build up with weld and file a straight slot again.

I found a missing pin down in my gear box where it could have done serious harm. Gladly it got stuck in place in a glob of sludge. So, watch out where it might be in case it is missing.

The slot in the ball can be welded and recut. Usually the pin is worn pretty badly and is also loose in the top cover. When the pin is loose in the top cover, I usually ream the cover for a larger pin and remachine the slot in the ball to match. I replace the pin with a hardened dowel pin. Like Wil said, be very careful when removing the stick that the pin doesn't fall into the transmission.

I’m thinking about using this for a new pin. Any suggestions

That should work.. I think the pin is 1/4" in diameter stock.
it should be fairly soft steel. It is the sacrificial part so the housing and the ball are protected from excessive wear.

My shifter ball and pin looked just like that when I got my truck. I reamed out the hole and widened the slot to accept a larger pin. The material you’re looking at should work fine.

i used part of a grade 5 bolt as a new pin and it works okay, i didnt ream it out for a bigger pin so it is still a bit sloppy but much better and you can clearly find the gears now.
