Caster and camber kit needed?

I've been told by the tire shop that I need a "caster and camber kit" on my Expy when having my front end alignments performed. Has anyone else been told this? Is it really necessary or is it just another way to to get more of my green. Their reasoning is that the factory does not offer enough adjustability and that this kit will allow for a better alignment. They still perform the alignment without it but claim they can't get it within their specs. If it is causing premature wear on my tires or suspension then I can understand but I'm not sure it isn't a hose job. What the general consensus on this issue? Any takers?

It's true if they have to adjust camber or caster.

They will probably sell and install the kit for a lot less than Ford.

You might want to give Ford a call and compare prices of the kit, installation, and allignment.

Hope this helps---Bob

I had my uncle in OK look my EXPY over after I bought it used last year. He owns an independent alignment shop. My EXPY checked within alignment specs at the time, but he said that I would have to buy the same "caster and camber kit" you are mentioning to completely adjust the alignment when it needed it. Unfortunately Ford did not allow for much if any adjustment for caster or camber in the factory setup. So I would say that you are not being fed a line about the kit.

I had the kits installed when I had my first alignment. Total charge was $180. It was $60 for the kit + $60 installation + $48 alignment + tax. They said they were cheaper than a dealer.

What does this kit consist of and how does it help. I am having a issue with the dealer being able to get my 2003 EB 4X4 not to drift to the right. They have even called Ford and they have set the specs to the outer limit on the back wheels. Any ideas???

Mine pulls a little to the left and the alignment shop tells me it's a result of not having the kit installed?

Well your case is completely different from the rest of us because you have IRS. But the alignment shop told me your model needs four kits. The kit on mine is merely a set of very thick washers with offset holes that contain on flat side, and bolts that have one flat side. When you turn the bolts you adjust the caster (or is it camber?). If you are using a Ford dealer they should have installed the proper kits.

This thread topic is a sore subject with me.
Can anyone explain to me why these caster/camber adjusting bolts were not installed at the factory?
I really was annoyed with this cost saving measure by Ford on a $30K+ vehicle. I know Ford installed the adjusting bolts on the 97 and 98 F-150 pick-ups and that the truck front suspension is slightly different than the Exp suspension but to skimp on something like these bolts is inexcusable.
If these adjusting bolts were offered as an option I would have gladly selected this option when I ordered my Exp. It is cost savings like this that will deter many people from buying another Ford.
