Just bought new tires for my 01 Expy and took it some place for an alignment. It pulls to the right a little bit. Tech called me back and said he can not align the Camber or Caster since it doesn't have a factory adjustment, but he can adjust the Toe? I need an aftermarket hardware kit with a special nut to allow this? Any truth to this? I just spent $700.00 for the skids so spending an extra 80.00 for the kit and labor is well worth the investment.
They told me the same thing. The bolts are offset with the washer on the end. That way the tech can rotate the bolt and it will push out the a arm so he can adjust the setting. I always forget which adjustment is which but it is a legit hardware stuff. I hope you have better luck then mine, I got the hardware kit but I have gotten it aligned three times and it still pulls to the left. I don't know if the shop is retarded or there is something with my expy. Hope I helped ya.
One of the most common problems is the tech tries to loosen the set bolt by using a box end wrench on the nut and an impact wrench w/socket on the adjusting bolt. This rounds the hole in the adjusting washer/cam which is supposed to be "D" shaped and the hole offset from the center so it works as a cam to make the proper adjustment. If the tech used the procedure that I just described he dosen't know what he is doing. If the hole in the washer/cam is rounded out you must get another or your front end will not hold it's alignment settings.
I picked it up Saturday afternoon and with no question, it does NOT pull to the right anymore, at least in driving under 50 mph. I'll find out later as we get on the highway if it completely fixed the problem. The store charged me about 46.00 for the kit and a half hour of labor to install. I hope this helps others.
