2001 V6 has code but don't remember it right now. Gauge doesn't work. And water plus oil warning light is on. Book tells how to check unit but jumping 2 wires. I have a 1999 V6 parts truck but so far getting to the sensor is problem. Also book says 2 sensors 1 for gauge 1 for computer controls but it is an old book thru 1999 either Haynes or Chiltons. Have only found 1 on the 2001. Had to remove upper radiator hose, then a/c compressor, drive belt and now coolant hoses/tube on intake in front of sensor. The tube coming up and y ing off to 1/2" hoses has 1 small bolt on top, 8mm head. Removed it but tube doesn't lift up or swivel yet. Don't know if it's just frozen or silicone solid. Do know intake gasket has been changed twice. Does this tube have another bolt? Or other helpful ideas to get to the sensor? Doubt I pull one off the 1999 truck, plug looks different. Thanks.
The code was for CHT sensor and why I wanted to replace it. So all I have to do now is get it off without breaking something else. And get a new 1. Battery is disconnected and scanner loaned out at moment but all 3 symptoms point to same conclusion. Could also be plug or wiring problem but I still have to get coolant tube out. Or pull intake or alternator for another way to spin sensor out. Thanks. Quite helpful to know only pull/replace 1 sensor and the 1999 parts won't fit.
Theres a coolant temp sensor and a head temp sensor. The head temp sensor will go out and put you in super high idle and you will go 30mph without even hitting the gas. You may have the wrong sensor. .
Well he asked about a 4.2 and I was referring to a 4.2. I have a 2000. From what I see here on autozone it has both sensors just like a 2001. Now it's really a matter of which head temp sensor he has
97 & 98s used the dual sensors. Starting in the 99 MY and the introduction of the hybrid cluster, the extra sensor only for the gauge went away and cluster temp data comes from the PCM (which uses ONLY a CHT sensor in this class of Ford vehicle).
And since he's into knocking parts houses as sources.... Oreilly was the only one local that carried the correct sensor for me...advanced and autozone gave me the wrong one
Got part the other day. Bumper to Bumper had 2 both by Standard but 1 of which is cheaper line. Haven't been back to truck lately or worked on it. Problem mostly was getting water pipe out of intake. This 2001 looks to have different plug than the 1999. Until I get the sensor removed it won't matter and easily resolved after I do. And if my part won't plug up then I'll just exchange it. Can't just look up a part at O'reilly's or Autozone websites. Usually will show several that won't apply. But I still look so I have an approximate price. Thanks for advice guys.
Got the water pipe out. Had o ring and silicone holding it in, plus 3 hoses on top, and 1 bolt which I'd done taken out. Unplugged and tried to remove sensor then realized I'd pulled cam sensor. There is no CHT sensor under the EGR. And other wires? Driver's side has some going just above the oil filter so think it would be oil pressure. Passenger side has some farther down but I'd say that was crankshaft sensor. Can't see anything on top of intake or on the heads. Will try to do more research or go back thru prior replies, threads, posts. Not supposed to be complicated but hey no rush and I ain't looked at it for months.
Just got back online. Out of data and phone not set up to come here. And enough going on. But may have time to look at truck again. Help is still help so thanks. And know there are some people who try to help just don't get it. They do it for their ego not to help others and won't be online here long. Anyone who has never made a mistake while mechanicing is either a liar or never worked on much anyway. Once I find sensor and replace it, with the 1 I got or a different 1 if need to, then I still got to get the cam sensor back in right. And need new book. Or old computer to run my Ford cd. Will endeavor to persevere. As old Indian chief said on "Outlaw Josey Wales"
