Lol. Probably not a Cummins swap. This one is a 55 f600. There is also a 53 f100 that is going to share parts with it. Not sure on their final destiny. I do have an extra 7.3 and 5-speed in the shed. 😁. That may be a stretch as I have some other projects to wrap up first.
Weird no start yesterday. I jumped in, turned the key and everything seemed to work except the starter. The solenoid gave a solid click and all the indicators seemed to be working correctly. I pecked on the starter, checked connections and the usual suspects with no success. While I was under the hood I noticed the trigger for the GPR relay was loose. I unhooked it so the glow plugs wouldn’t be working while I figured out the no start. As soon as I unhooked the wire I was able to start it. It started fine the rest of the day and today as well. I tried it several times to make sure.
The wire is still unhooked. I can’t think of a reason why that would have made any difference? Just coincidence? I am going to hook it back up this week after I check a few other connections.
The wire thing must have been some weird fluke as a couple weeks later the starter died. Swapped for a new one and all is well. This is why I like a warrantied starter. It is easy to replace without another financial investment. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want it to be a weekly occurrence, but once every 10 years or so doesn’t bother me any
it is time rebuild my IPR. It is surging a bit and giving some strong clues that it is ready for a little rehab. Ordered a rebuild kit from RiffRaff and also ordered an oil fill cap. It may be a small thing, but it does look good
I do want to make a note about RiffRaff’s customer service.
when I went to order the parts, the black fill cap was out of stock so I ordered a red one. Sometimes order tracking systems have a buffer so they do not over sell an item. So I sent an email with my order number and asked if they happened to have a black one, I would appreciate it, but red was cool if they didn’t have any. As you can see, I ended up with a black cap. My order was pretty small but they still took the time to read my email and update my order accordingly. Thanks @Riffraff Diesel

I too like autoparts starters and alts, usually good quality for me at least. I did have my 5.7 LT1's alt reman locally as previous was an auto reman from PO.
Probably should order Denso starter rebuild kit while available to have on hand.

I just went through something similar with my J-10. The alternator was under warranty, but was old enough to still say “made in the USA” on the case. I didn’t want to replace it with a lower quality Chinese version, so I had it reworked locally. I haven’t installed it yet, but it looks like it will work well enough. If it dies in short order, I will look at a one wire setup
Exactly why I try to hold onto OE made units. Quality is better, the Cad already had some Chyna one on it...front bearing retainer was missing so entire guts dropped back and started grinding the fan on case!
I was about 1.5mi from house and said F it. Plus water pumps on those run off camshaft, so I would be fine.
I also had a pretty big junk yard score. This is my old dash pad:
it has been pretty badly cracked up since I bought the truck. I bought a gray one with the intent of painting it. Then I ran into this one:
It is not perfect as there are 3 little cracks but definitely an improvement over my current one. This is what it looks like installed. Matches pretty well.
I needed to rebuild the IPR so while I was at it I decided to address my fill plug on the hpop. It stripped out a few years ago. I tried a couple extractors and nothing worked. I was almost ready to drill it to make more room for the extractor to bite but was afraid of metal shavings falling down into the reservoir. I decided to try this. I used the flat head bit and drove it into the hole in the plug. As I drove it into the bolt I saw it turn and I threaded it out by hand. I have no idea why it was so tight but I am glad it worked.
if you have never used one, as you hit it with a hammer it transfers the downward force into a rotational force. It helps to break loose stubborn screws and bolts. You can also switch it to tighten screws, but I have never used one in that capacity.
the IPR rebuild appears to have been beneficial. It smokes less, appears to have resolved a slight hesitation it had under load, and seems to run a bit smoother. The data seemed to suggest that the IPR was not reacting smoothly. Either way, the truck seems the like so we will see how it goes next week.
