2001 running rough

Ive got A 2001 7.3 that giving me a little trouble. it has a rough idle with the rpm bouncing from 655-710. just every other second or so it alternates between the two. Second thing i am showing a number 8 cylinder contribution code when i do a contribution test on it. I have the newest cps for the truck so ive ruled that out. My icp and ipr are both showing good readings at idle and on the throttle. I also did a buzz test and number 8 sounded just like the rest do.

The reason i even ran the test was i have my idle issue and a shuddering from 1400-1900 RPM. the shudder goes away but still just doesnt sound right.

Also does anyone use the forscan software? this is what i used and the number 8 delta reading is showing 5 degrees advanced and the rest are showing 0-1.2 degrees. Im not sure what this means so any help would be appreciated.

The # 8 injector is at end of fuel system and shows a code on lots of trucks. I'm sure the experts here can explain that better than me.

Your rough idle at start ? in cold weather ? Cold engine ? I use Archoil in my oil & fuel during winter months, that seems to help and I get better MPG.

Mileage ? Ever replaced the oil rings on injectors ? Checked the gaps on injector solenoids?

That is what ive heard about number 8, it is just always a problem. I just dont like the shudder and idling.

Cold engine or warm it dont matter it idles rough all the time. The engine shudder isnt as noticeable when it isnt warmed up all the way but it is still there. Temperature hasnt mattered either it does it all the time. I am looking to get some Stiction Eliminator for my next oil change, Ive heard it has helped some people out.

She just barely rolled over 180k. Myself has only put about 5k on it since ive owned it. I am not sure on injector maintenance before I had it but i know it has stock injectors. I read that if the rings were going it would blow smoke on starts or just smoke a little in general but there isnt any smoke at all coming from the tail pipe. I could be wrong though, im not an expert by any means. I havent had time to pull valve covers to check gaps on injectors either.

One thing that i did find odd was when I was running the contribution test, the idle pulsing disappeared then came right back when the test was over? I dont know why or if that would be normal?

Do a PERDELS/contribution test and post up % for each cylinder. Do it when warmed up.

Since you have Forscan take a look at ICP psi and IPR Duty Cycle %. ICP should generally track with throttle input and DC should never go over 65%.

Pull the connector off the ICP, if it is wet with oil the ICP is failing and needs replacing. OEM only for sensors on these trucks.

Cylinders 1-2 show perdels of .8-1.5%, 3-6 show 0%, 7 shows 1-1.5%, and 8 shows 4.5-5.2%

Has a new ICP in it due to the old one having oil in the connector. The ICP and IPR show good readings and do track with throttle. My IPR showed the duty cycle at 69% one time while doing a small pull.

Fuel pressure i haven't been able to check yet. I read on this forum the thread sizes for the ports on the fuel bowl but they weren't even close, Ill have to buy a new adapter to attach it to the bowl.

Ive finally got some time this afternoon that im going to be able to test my fuel pressure but i came across an article that said for a buzz test the engine needs to be cold. I did not know this so i did mine on a hot engine. I did one this morning on a cold engine and all sounded the same except number 6 was a lot quieter and i mean a lot. It didn't through a code or anything it was just noticeably not as loud.

Could that injector be my issue?
If it was an injector i would assume it would throw a contribution code but maybe not?

Heck yeah, check the wiring to #6. Continuity from injector connector to 42 pin should do. Pic credit Tugly.

Concerned that #6 was fine (0% perdels) when warmed up. Is it cold there? Tired injectors really like synth oil in cold weather.

Good idea to check the fuel psi if you can. Especially with no CEL.
