FordTruckNoob (Leonard) was nice enough to send me a dose of the Cool Shot Ultra to try out. The AC system in my truck has always left a bit to be desired. I have done some things to bring it into a place that I am good with, but it could use a bit of fine tuning still.
A quick summary of what I have done is below:
- Checked for proper refrigerant pressure and levels
- UV blocking tint installed on windshield
- Evaporator coil removed and cleaned
- Resistor coil removed and replaced
- Blower motor removed and replaced
I am right at that point of not wanting to spend anymore money on improving the system because it works pretty well. Although, something like this Cool Shot Ultra may get me a few more degrees (or nothing at all) and put the AC system in a place where I am better than just "OK" with it. Time will tell. I don't drive the truck much, so taking readings on the AC output temperature and the ambient temperature may go a bit slowly. Although, next Monday we are headed to the beach with the camper, so I will just log what my readings are for the 3 hour trip out there and the 3 hour trip back. That should give me enough data to insert the Cool Shot Ultra and then take new readings at that point.
Thanks Leonard for the generous offer and following through with it! Reps sent!
EDIT: I am in rep jail, can someone please rep FordTruckNoob for me on my behalf, thanks.
@'88 E-350 I can't reply to your PM. Your inbox is full.
I'm so bad at taking out the trash, but it's now been done.
My PM question to Noob was--can the plastic injector thing really be used with a charged system as the directions say? Apparently the answer is yes. I probably should have made this question public and not sure why I didn't since others may also want to know. Once I get some baseline numbers I'll be treating my Excursion which can use some help in the cooling department.

Glad to hear you got it figured out. Does your lo-side pressure not get below 50psi ever? What's your hi-side pressure like? You may either have too much refrigerant or a tired compressor.
So I have a noob question... What size is the fitting for 134A refrigerant? They have two sizes listed and I was going to try this on both my truck and a 2010 HHR.

Yeah, surfing Amazon for their product can get confusing. The SAE fittings are for R12 and household systems. PM your address to me. I'll send a set to you.

50 is pretty normal when it's hot out, and I'm not sure if I've tested the Ex. The A/C was working seemingly well when I bought it and it does a decent job 'till the temps get above 100. Cooling that much square footage of a black vehicle takes some energy and many people say that the system just isn't quite good enough even in pickups. My '99 V-10 F-350 did fine, but many here report problems with the 7.3, no clue if there's differences in the compressors or other parts of the systems.
Once I'm ready to start my pre-Coolshot testing I'll check pressures before I start. Been busy with other stuff and haven't even started the Ex in a week.

Ok cool. I can see your point about having to cool a big black box. Does your Ex have the rear AC?
This is the beauty of having different people in different climates test this stuff. Your experience with it could be completely different from mine. I look forward to hearing your results.
