I hope I’m wrong, but I’m not expecting any big MPG improvements with this motor. Just can’t get over the physics of these trucks.
I came from a V10 2V to my 6.2 both with 4.30 gears and there was a small mpg increase but nothing that was big enough to brag about, both ran between 8 & 9 pulling average on long trips not tank to tank but the intown mileage is a little better. I buy my trucks to pull our trailer and that's it's only function and if I compared them to my gas trucks from the 70s, 80s and 90s I pulled trailers with the mileage and power had greatly increased along with reliability. If my 6.2 needs tp be replaced it with be with a 7.3 but it's only 6 years old and I like to run them 12 to 15 years.

i would have been happy with 450/500 in at least the pickups. doesnt feel like "godzilla" at 430/475. dodge needs a new hemi and quick so ford can bump up the numbers

Well, I’ve gone from checking the web daily for the power numbers to checking daily for the Ford Builder to include the 2020 MY.

It never ends...

Well, I’m glad someone else is checking daily. I’ll just quit and let you keep checking!

I hope they left room for upgrades. You can bet Chevy did. Is the Chevy derated for commercial applications?

as of right now it looks like the 6.6 Duramax is the only engine available in 4500-6500 trucks. that engine is derated to 350hp and 700 ft lbs of torque

Been rumors gm working on something larger than the 6.6 for exactly that need. 8L+. Big, simple, no DI. But just rumor at this point.

It would make sense. The crazy hp/tq wars in the diesel arena has left a gap and opportunity.

Plot of 6.2L (2011-2016) and new 7.3L engine specs

I put the 6.2 and the 7.3 engine specs on the same plot for comparison. Everyone is talking about how the new 7.3 has a nice flat torque curve from 1500 rpm on up but the 6.2 torque curve is actually pretty flat by comparison.

Some notes:

- I used the 2011 to 2016 version of the 6.2 because that is what I own.

- I started the plot at 1500 rpm because that is where the published 7.3 plot begins.

- The 7.3 displacement is about 18% greater than the 6.2 and the torque and HP increase roughly matches this ratio.

I laugh at the people that are not impressed with the numbers on this engine. It's already better numbers wise than any other HD gas engine. Why would Ford put this engine out and not be more than just a little better than the competition? They have to leave room for improved power numbers in the future just like the diesel engines have done. I would like to see what the numbers are in 3 years compared to now.

Not being critical of the 7.3 as I plan on ordering it on my next truck. The plot surprised me somewhat as I expected to see a bigger difference in the slope of the torque curves due to the push rod vs overhead cam designs. The 6.2 torque does peak at a higher rpm but it still has decent torque down low (obviously not as much as the 7.3).

The 6.2 torque was increased by about 5% in 2017 - if the same is done for the 7.3 it will reach the magical 500 ft-lbs number that many expected to see.

The 7.3 paired with the 10 speed transmission should be a great combination and provide the right gear for any load or grade.

Thanks for creating and sharing this graph. I'd like to see the 2017+ 6.2 graph but couldn't readily locate one.
