There's no SAE test for this, but the new motor was designed to get better fuel economy under heavy commercial loads. I would assume that the tuning was optimized for that scenario as well as durability. I don't think it's crazy to also assume that aftermarket tuners will be able to unlock big gains on this engine without those constraints. For use in F550 trucks with heavy service bodies etc, I think fleet customers will be really happy with the stock power delivery.
Someone should graph out the v10, 6.2L V8 and this mew 7.3L engine torque curves.

you can get some kind of idea by looking at 5star's website.i know the actual numbers will vary but atleast its some kind of reference
you read my mind, we will get some good comparisons of the 6.2 and the 7.3 ... once the ones we order come in ,.. the 7.3 reminds me of the the 3v v10 for sure
I hoped for more, but the curve does look real nice. Here is the competition for comparison, also a lot of grunt starting at relatively low RPM.
IMO that's a poor graph. It uses two scales, and the lines don't cross at 5252 RPM so you have a little work to do making a straight comparison. It exaggerates the HP graph. HP never exceeds torque for that engine (under 5252 rpm) yet they make it look like HP is soaring. It's not.

Looks like the 7.3 DESTROYS the V10 in torque at low RPM, although those two graphs aren't really comparable since one is wheel and other is flywheel.
The flat, broad torque curve of the new 7.3L is very impressive. Nearly diesel-like in it's nature. Obviously not as high in torque, but certainly one of the flattest for a gasser. More than 400 fl-lb from 1500 to 5500 rpm is outstanding.
GM has intake and exhaust options in their catalog that provide performance improvements (apparently; I don’t remember any power increase specifics being provided). I getting very curious how this V8 is going to sound and if Ford is sandbagging the power numbers, intake and exhaust options would tap into those.
I will be test driving the first 7.3 Tremor I see. If it’s as good as it sounds, I might have to sleep in our trailer for a few weeks to avoid the wrath from the Home CFO.
Sure seems like this motor is really overbuilt for the consumer market. If you take the marketing at face value, the engine was built for the commercial market and Ford basically said “Well, let’s just throw it into the F-250/350 as well”. Probably to increase the volume and recover the development costs quicker.
I hope the reliability is better than the 6.2 and 6.8 Our company buys nothing but gas pickups and they are PATHETIC on fuel milage and reliability.
These trucks get USED every day as trucks and the gas engines just cant seem to take it. Not even used to their max capacity but have a multitude of problems

Based on the info that Mr. Truck recorded in the video, Ford’s marketing department wants you to believe this engine is just what you need.
I hope I’m wrong, but I’m not expecting any big MPG improvements with this motor. Just can’t get over the physics of these trucks.
