Fed up.. cam/crank issue

06 F250 6.0 - 125,853 miles

We were having issues with our truck shutting off while driving and it turned out to be an issue with the fuel pickup. About a week later after the mechanic dropped the fuel tank, cleaned it out and replaced the pickup the truck was shutting off again and sputtering a lot, so it went back to the shop where he replaced the icp sensor, blue spring and fuel filter. That job was completed yesterday.

The shop owner told us he drove it 80+ miles in the last couple days and that it didn't sputter or die on him once... but it sputtered on my husband 4 times on the way home yesterday from picking it up, then 5 times in our driveway where it died twice. Today we started it up and it ran fine for maybe 10 miles and started to sputter twice then died at an intersection, where luckily we weren't hit. At that point the check engine light came on. We got it pulled into a gas station where it died again and then would crank but not start. So we decided to leave it and went home for an hour to eat dinner. We just got back home from checking codes and got P0336, P2614 and P2617 then showed EGR on the screen? I read a few forums where it's said it probably threw those for cranking it so many times. But I have no idea where to even look now.

Truck has had a new radiator, turbocharger, batteries and starter done within the last 2 months (after dealing with a parts thrower shop) and after spending $5,000 I honestly hoped our troubles were done when this diesel mechanic told me "Your truck is good now". Any ideas?

Seems to be pointing at the crankshaft position sensor (CKP).

Do you have a good code reading tool and something that can read live data?
If you find that your not getting syne for the crank and cam sensors that will
give you a no start. The first thing I would do is to check to be sure that the
connector is all the way plugged in and not just stuck on.

P2617 could be explained by that. P2614 can also point to a loose connection.

Here is some stuff from DieselTachRon on Youtube. He will be missed.

In addition to keeping an eye on sync as Sean advises, watch the rpm value. A flaky rpm signal is also a common sign of the CKP having issues.

Sorry to hear and this won’t make you feel better, but shop 2 is also a parts thrower shop.

Wow you had 3 of the best guys respond to your post quickly! All 3 have helped me out when I was having issues similar to you. I ended up having the camshaft position sensor replaced and took care of my problem. It was frustrating as hell when my truck shut of on me for no reason that I could see or find!

Yahiko has you going in the right direction on what to look for. It might be time to invest in software and a laptop to do your own trouble shooting. Auto Enginuity or a cracked IDS setup would be a lovely tool to have when you have issues like this.

Having just dealt with cam sensor issues, double and triple check how clean the block is under the camshaft sensor. they rust and distort the mounting tab. You HAVE to get all the rust off or the sensor isn't positioned right.

UPDATE

That Monday following this post the shop had our truck towed back in, where they had it for 3 months and 6 days. Luckily, I had made a video of the sound our truck was making 2 days before I made this post which included the dash board where you can see the mileage (I have a point for why I mention this lol).. I have had cam/crank codes pop up since the very start (April 2019) of our truck stalling and shutting off. Both shops ignored those and fixated on other issues they thought could be the cause (like my first post where I talk about the turbocharger replacement) and every time the shop fixed what they thought was the culprit we went right back to stalling/shutting off. So, since the beginning 7 months ago, we have paid around $6800 trying to get our truck "drivable". First shop replaced turbo/solenoid, starter, batteries, then wanted to replace HPOP. We then decided to get a second opinion at an actual diesel shop to see if it was the HPOP.

Second shop (who this post is of) said it's fuel issues. During the last 3 months (Aug 5th-Nov 11th) we called the shop several times to get an update. They kept claiming the truck was NOT stalling or shutting off at all, but that they "believe us" and want to continue to work on it to see what we're talking about. My husband and I finally had enough and went in on Veterans Day to pick the truck up. They still claimed it wasn't doing it, told us we didn't owe anything and handed us the keys. HERE'S THE KICKER! When my husband turned the truck on in their parking lot it had only SEVEN miles added to odemeter! The mechanic got really ****ty with me when I questioned this (because again I have a time stamped video showing what the mileage was before they towed it back in) so we ended up just leaving before we got too upset and did something we regret. 3 months they let our truck sit instead of being honest saying they have no idea what it could be and letting us find another shop.

WE ONLY MADE IT 8.2 MILES DOWN THE ROAD BEFORE THE TRUCK STALLED AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF! More drama happened and the owner of the shop refused to speak to me so we had no other choice but have it towed in to a 3rd diesel shop (one I didn't know about prior) and guess what it was? The mother fudging CRANK SENSOR and pigtail harness. The very thing that popped up 6 months ago that no body wanted to replace and would have saved us 5k dollars, was the whole reason our truck was stalling and engine was shutting off. Not the turbo, not the fuel issues, the crank... You can imagine at this point I want to not only kiss my truck because it works now but I also want to light it on fire LOL!
Oh, they also said we have a lot of carbon build up (?) in our brand new turbo from sitting for too long? They said the truck will drive rough for a little bit because of that..

So, I appreciate everyone's help!! Ya'll are the best! And I am glad to finally be done with this nightmare!

I'm so sorry for what you went through. Sean got it right out of the gate, and ironically he took his truck to a shop to get work down and not it's going to be expensive to fix their repair.

It's just soooooo hard to find good repair work these days in all the fields. Most of us on this site do our own work and even we have issues outside of our wheelhouse. This year I had to have our home air conditioning evaporator replaced. The guy who did the work was poorly trained, he came back due to a feon leak, then a third trip by the company but a different tech found he split a washer so it would never seal. The heating time came and the furnace would just shut down. The second tech came back, was going crazy following the same troubleshooting steps I already did. An hour and a half later he found the original tech unscrewed things he shouldn't have and never put it back together. So three service calls on the company for warranty due to a bad tech.

Jack did you happen to read what I get to go deal with today?

I need to cool off before I go in to have that chat.
For everyone that has not had time to read the post in the What did you do to your 6.0L today.
I had rear end work done this last spring and now I have a howling diff and silver flaked oil in it.
I am a tad bit bent right now.

I will give them one shot to fix it.
But it looks like I will be learning how to do this work.
I just don't have the tooling to do the setup.

Sorry to hear that, Sean. You've helped hundreds of owners here, and me dozens of time, so I'd think you have so much good karma saved up that your truck would run great forever. It just doesn't work that way, dang it. Wish I was there to buy you some beers.
