I see that this post and comments are almost 2 years old, but if I could add my 2 cents. I just bought a '15 Lariat that has sync 2 and I kind of hate it. I would like to have Apple carplay. I have done some research and could buy all of the parts new for about $1000. I was talking to a friend of mine a few weeks ago about it and he suggested maybe go to a local stereo shop. For likely $400-$600 I could get a replacement head unit.
Unless companies such as PAC-Audio or iData has come up with a solution, when it comes to 2015 Lariat and up trim level, the head unit cannot be replaced. Believe it or not, that’s a good price for a full SYNC 3 conversion. Does that price include programming the APIM for your vehicle?
If you go this route, make sure you get the USB module that’s designed for Apple CarPlay and not just a stock module from a 2016 F150. These did not become standard until the 2017 model year.
Another poster mentioned going to a salvage yard and removing the equipment from a vehicle. Again, you can do that but you’d still have to get the APIM programmed for your vehicle otherwise, the system will be useless.
