Pardon me for what may be an ignorant question, but can a 2015 F-150 with SYNC be upgraded to the more modern SYNC 3? I love my truck, and plan to keep it for a lot longer, and I wonder about this, and if it can be done, would it be worth the expense? Thanks in advance for any advice.
you can replace the module and add a wiring harness adapter to make it work. tons of post on here from people making the switch.I did the upgrade on my truck and it works great ended up costing myself 500 bucks worth of salvage yard parts. i have a 2018 so i didn't need to change the harness at all

Yes, you can upgrade your truck from MFT to SYNC 3 but to do so, the conversion will cost you between $700.00-$1200.00 dollars.
The price difference is if you also want the factory navigation.
Also if you want to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto with this conversion, you’ll also need the compatible USB module which is another $30.00-$50.00 dollars depending on where you purchase it from.
With this being said and to and to answer the latter part of your posting, only “you” can determine if it’s worth the expense.
I’m just old I guess and am super happy with my 2015 synch, don’t know what i’m missing i guess. I here people talking it down quite a bit on these forums, so thought I would give it a thumbs up. I came from a 2006 Super Duty before this so this is awesome. I can call my Wife and talk hands free. I can synch my iphone and crank judas priest wirelessly! For me it is gold for my beer runner, boat/trailer hauler, super happy with it, not sure what more i would need. I also just use my phone for directions, works perfect.
BTW, i have a 2017 F450 I pay my bills in and it seems to work exactly the same, not sure if it’s synch 3? Don’t care.

Yeah. I guess I don't know what I'm missing. The phone works through the audio system. The audio system works playing radio, CD, or USB input. I'm a happy guy.

I guess I fall into this same category. To be honest, I really do not like the Sync 3 screen in my brides Edge, especially at night.
Hmm, Maybe I should leave well enough alone. I have factory nav with my truck, and can do all those those things too. The only complaint I've had is sometimes mine doesn't recognize my command, i.e., call Jim, and sometimes when I'm typing in a destination the key board blinks out letters and numbers and aggravates me while I' m typing in the new destination. Really not sure what the additional features are with SYNC 3, may not be worth it.
I don't have nav and don't miss it. If I need directions I use Google maps on my Google Pixel 3A phone. The Ford nav maps are out of date anyway. My biggest complaint is that the sound settings for text messages keeps changing by itself.

The main advantage of SYNC 3 is having the ability to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and both of these interfaces are superior to the SYNC 3 interface and it’s AppLink.

Do you have the eight inch screen in your F450?
If so, you have SYNC 3 and you’re all set to use Apple CarPlay.
I see that this post and comments are almost 2 years old, but if I could add my 2 cents. I just bought a '15 Lariat that has sync 2 and I kind of hate it. I would like to have Apple carplay. I have done some research and could buy all of the parts new for about $1000. I was talking to a friend of mine a few weeks ago about it and he suggested maybe go to a local stereo shop. For likely $400-$600 I could get a replacement head unit.

Just go to your local junk yard and find a truck with the same option set as yours and buy the radio and the USB port for the system and install it. I think all
of it cost me around 400. I picked up one without nav because I use Waze all the time works great with apple car play
