Hey all, having trouble with the passenger side power window on my 1990 F150. If I let it travel all the way down it will get stuck and I'm unable to roll it back up. If i take the motor/regulator assembly out of the door frame it will roll up and down just fine. I can reset the window to the top of it's travel and it will move up and down just fine until the next time it rolls all the way down and gets stuck. Anyone here have any ideas what could be causing it? Or a possible fix? Thanks in advance guys.
A little more info, the teeth on the regulator look ok, so do the teeth on the motor gear that interact with regulator. I've taken apart the motor to clean/grease where appropriate. The brushes in the motor looked a little worn, but because it will roll up and down I'm suspecting that's not the issue.
This is kinda a common problem with these trucks. My 89 F250 does the same thing as yours.
The problem looks to be a jamming up of the window regulator when the inside door frame bows outward when rolled all the way down. That puts a bind causing the window motor not to be strong enough to unjam and roll window back up.
I have not looked in to any fixes myself(yet) but I just don't roll it down all the way.... till one of the kids does then I have to press in on the inside of door while rocking the switch. Usually it will unjam and go back up. If not then alot of beating(on the door) and cussing works.......
Also the driver side will do the same but not as often for some reason. Go figure that out!
Thanks for the ideas Eddie, it was good timing too. I had just taken the door panel off to fiddle with it. I'll try banging/pressing on it some, see if I can't get it to come loose. That's good to know it's not just me dealing with this.
I too replace the motors, but that did not fix the issue for me. It may help if the old window motors are wore out. I also checked voltage going to the window motors, thinking of a bad connection causing poor current to motors. Even with window motor directly off a battery I can get passenger side to jam up.
That's when I noticed the inner door panel bowing out, when its bowed, motor jams up. I think there may be a stop in window regulator that's missing or bad. But I haven't checked further.....
Does the motor repeatedly click trying to push the window back up? The "gear box" connected to the actual electric motor has plastic plugs in it that eventual fall apart and need replaced. However, if you replaced the whole unit with a brand new one then this would not be the problem.
The motor would not be the issue. The gear drive gear on the motor is fairly small and would go around several times in the process of raising or lowering the window. Something in the window track is causing the glass to bind up. How is the window felt/weatherstripping? Is the window track still connected ie the bracket connecting the track to the door isn’t broken.
Perhaps an internal brace has a pulled spot weld? That really sucks, both of my window motor gearboxes had a quarter inch of slop in them and replacing the whole setup fixed my problem.
So I tried banging on the door but it didn't do the trick, maybe I wasn't cussing loud enough?
I ended up pulling out motor and regulator to reset window position, while I had them out I spent some time fiddling with it. If I disconnect the regulator and reset it to a halfway position on the motor it will then move up and down just fine until i hit the very top or bottom of its travel, it will then stick in place. Almost looks like it buckles out slightly, putting a pressure on the motor gear that the motor can't overcome. When mounted on the door panel with regulator in the window track I believe full upward travel is prevented by the top of the door. The window will be completely rolled up before the regulator reaches full travel. There is a small dowel/rod at the bottom of the regulator that looks like it should prevent full travel downwards, but whether the assembly is in or out of the door frame it seems to hit this point and jam up.
I don't get any clicking while trying to get the widow up. And the track(s) on the bottom and sides of window looked ok to me, wouldn't hurt to take another look though.
At this point I'm thinking the problem lies more with the rationale regulator and motor. The way it will jam outside of the door frame makes me think it shouldn't reach full travel when mounted but is doing that anyway.
Has anyone else had their motor/regulator out and applied power? Will the regulator jam up at the bottom of travel?
