98 F150 Power Window Problem

Hi, first I'd like to say that I searched all over for a search feature and maybe I'm blind but I couldn't find one... sorry if this has been asked a million times =/

My 98 F150 driver-side power window stopped working today. I called my mechanic and he told me that when I push the button for the window to go down, if it makes a click (which it does), then the Window Regulator needs to be replaced... not the motor. He told me that it'd cost me about $220-300 to do it through him (labor + part). A lot of money to shell out, so, I got to looking and found Window Regulators for $25 bucks and regulators w/ motors for $50 bucks.

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction of how I can troubleshoot this issue so I know if I just need a regulator or if I need a regulator and a motor.

Thanks a lot.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I haven't done one of those but I don't think it's that hard of a job. Taking the door trim off is easy once you remove the screw in the door handle (inside). Then just lift up on it and the door's frame is exposed.

Usually it is the motor, not the regulator. To check sometimes you can remove the door panel and smack the motor with a hammer while trying to lower the window. If it starts, then the motor is shot.
